`Jungle Capitalists - a Story of Globalisation, Greed and Revolution' is the extraordinary story of the United Fruit company and their dealings in Central America. It tracks their rise and fall through the creation of new markets to 'el pulpo', the octopus-like company with tentacles everywhere, to eventual political scandal and collapse.
As well as being an engaging story in itself, at times galloping along like a spy thriller, Jungle Capitalists is a fascinating insight into the early development of the multinational corporation. United Fruit pioneered all kinds of business practices, from early experiments in public relations to political lobbying, and even calling on the CIA to aid in regime change when things turned against ... I picked up a second hand copy, prepared to give it a go, and I'm glad I did. By drawing a parallel between the decline of Britain's place in the scheme of world affairs and of Britain's proud tradition of producing the 'world's best goalies', Chapman has produced an analysis of the 20th century that is hard to beat.
It's an unlikely analogy, comparable perhaps to (Ballard's?) 'The assassination of President Kennedy considered as a downhill car race', but it works like a charm. Only quibble: 'Jack' Thomson the great Celtic keeper of the 1920s/30s was actually known as John.
If you like the modern history of Britain or sport, piuck this up as soon as you can.
