The title of this book is most apt. Singer presents his view of ethics by considering practical situations that may present moral dilemmas. He arranges the chapters so as to provide progressive examples in which he puts forward a coherent, if in places controversial, approach to ethical behaviour. Chapter headings are:
1. About Ethics
2. Equality and its Implications
3. Equality for Animals?
4. What's Wrong with Killing?
5. Taking Life: Animals
6. Taking Life: The Embryo and the Fetus
7. Taking Life: Humans
8. Rich and Poor
9. Insiders and Outsiders
10. The Environment
11. Ends and Means
12. Why Act Morally?
Appendix: On Being Silenced in Germany
Rather than an encyclopedia on ethics, Peter Singer, himself one of the most controversial authors in contemporary philosophy, has compiled a number of easy-to-understand essays on issues in moral philosophy and ethics. The range of topics is agreeably wide and will provide beginning (or advanced) philosophy students with a solid background. Whether you agree on everything Singer says and writes or not, you will have to agree that this book is indeed a very useful one.

If you don't know anything, or know very little about Marx and his ideas and you need to brush up but don't have the time to sit for hours in a library, then get this book. I am a complete beginner with Marx, I had heard of him but knew nothing about his ideas. I had to acquire this knowledge in a very short space of time for an essay that I was writing for my Masters. This book was perfect, just enough information to give me the basics without getting to indepth AND in an easy to read format.
It covers events in his life as well as his main achievements and ideas.
This book makes no assumptions that you know anythign about Marxism so it is very easy to follow whilst avoiding being patronising or school bookish. In fact the ... Read More:

I found this book to be really useful with my nursing ethics module, as it takes into consideration issues such as abortion, euthanasia (including newborn euthanasia), allocation of resources, organ donation etc. It also looks at nursing as an ethical issue. This book will come in handy for other modules, as this book addresses a lot of nursing issues, of which are likely to crop up at certain stages in my course. A very interesting read.

This most difficult of Philosphers is here made readable by Singer, probably one of the best interpreters of Hegel's work alive today. The complex language and even more complex philosophical substance of Hegel's work is accessible in this short introduction. Nevertheless, the language and ideas within still remain very complex and their meanings illusive even within this simplified book. I first came across this book whilst studying at University and was amazed just how much Hegel's philosophy influenced Marx and at least for that reason alone Hegel remains important today.
Perhaps less well known than some of the other major philosophers in history, Hegel's work "the Philosophy of History" and "Elements of the Philosophy of Right" remain influential ... Read More:
