Very readable, a simple no frills book that is easy to follow, informative, fascinating and eco-friendly. Who knew you could do so much with a nettle, I just thought they were a painful weed until I read this.

This book is short (83 pages long in all) and is mostly taken up with an alphabetical listing of wood types with a short description and a list of what they have been and are used for. This list is exactly the same as the one on the website www.british-trees.com so check this out first to see if you think the book is worth buying.
There are also 6 (large text) pages on the author's woodland thoughts and 10 pages on making fires. I would have liked these two sections to have been longer as the author is obviously very knowledgable and has a lots of "wood experience" but only shares a small fraction of his knowledge.
There are a few small black and white pictures scattered throughout the book.

Not a large book, or what you would expect from Waterstones. The main point of this book is the knowledge that is inside, it is to the point, and it isn't needlessly fattened out with talk that is irrelevent.
This book is magic - straight to the point in ordinary english but by no means simple. It hits the nail on the head every time from equipment (on a budget or otherwise) to intelligent bushcraft. The writer speaks to YOU with passion about his trade and shares the secrets of getting that all important footage. I am a semi professional filmmaker dabbling in wildlife videography as a hobby at the mo and using the techniques within the book I got some great Kingfisher footage today - it was worth every single penny tenfold.

I've wanted to be a wildlife film-maker for as long as I can remember but knew it was competitive and had little idea how to get started. Then I found this book. I suddenly feel like I know so much more about the industry and have much more confidence. The case studies of many of my heroes were fascinating and made me feel like I did have a chance after all. I also have a much clearer idea how the wildlife film-making business works and how professional movies are made. I had no idea how many different people and jobs were involved in film-making and this book covers them all. This is the only book on this topic ever written - so if you want to work in wildlife film-making you can't really do without it.

It has been many years since I have read such an enjoyable book for children.
The colourful characters and their escapades jump off of each page as one is swept away by the journey they decide to undertake.
The author has a gift like Mr. Dahl in that one wishes to inhabit the world that he weaves. I am going to buy more - for my younger relatives and also for my adult friends.
It is quite simply a timeless book, long may the Hatters live!
