A biased and very exaggerated view of a worst possible case scenario, boardering on the 'loony left'. There is no doubt that this is a very important topic that requires considerable consideration from all levels of society but to suggest that the world is on the verge of collapse and that a form of communism is our only hope is unhelpful and misleading.
There's no doubt that the book is well written and researched but if you're looking for a balanced and well argued book on this subject i suggest you read something else.

Heinberg is the foremost expert of 'peak oil' - the idea that we are more than half way through the world's oil reserves. Here he presents various angles on the problem: everything from how the industrial age influenced design to, yes, parrots. But, unlike the above reviewer, I found it all relevant. Heinberg has a clear mind, and his broad-ranging thoughts are here applied to a wide range of related issues to 'peak oil'. A good read!

Richard Heinberg's perspective, that all living organisms including humans are simply "energy processing systems" is compelling. For most of our existance, we humans have been living on the incidental energy of the sun, received on an annual basis: animal and human muscle power derived from vegetation; heat from wood; wind for windmills and sailing boats. The 200 year fossil fuel age has been a very unusual interlude when we have had available to us the stored energy from ancient sunlight collected over millions of years, which is what fossil fuels are.
His book examines the consequences of us reaching the high-water mark in the fossil-fuel age and our choices for the future. Do we intelligently manage energy descent or fight a hopeless fight ... Read More:

Having read Heinberg's other books, I was mighty pleased to read this, his third on the subject of oil depletion. Here is some good foresight: a plan of action to respond to the forthcoming crises. Colin Campbell's 'protocol' is presented here in full, and given an intelligent and comprehensive commentary by Heinberg. Indispensable!

Wonderfully presented collection of essays, explorations and ideas by a group of experts in their fields. There is an occult flavour to the selection, without hint of New Age fluff, but perhaps it's more accurate to say the writing is simply an antidote to the mainstream. There is food for thought here, certainly. There is also a sense of coherence too, despite the apparently wide-ranging subject matter and style of the individual pieces. It will be interesting to see how that deepens over successive issues.
At a time when magazines sacrifice substance to make way for more advertising, publications like this make for stimulating reading in those precious moments snatched during the working day. My advice is to grab this first issue now; by the time ... Read More:

Did you really think Adam and Eve were unique or unprecedented? Every human culture has a myth of the "fall" from an original golden-age of peace and prosperity to death and disease, including eskimos, aborigines and Native Americans. The author examines "fall" myths from a variety of angles, presenting all the major theories as to what they might mean. "Memories and Visions of Paradise" presents a much clearer overview of the "saddest story ever told" than any previous book on the topic. A commendable effort, well worth picking up for anyone interested in myth or religion.
