This book is an excellent portrayal of life in Ireland in the not so distant past. I read it to my 8 year old as a bedtime story over a couple of weeks, we both thoroughly enjoyed it, the humour suits all ages and the story unfolds beautifully. In fact my daughter has since joined the local irish dancing class!

This book was pretty good, though I felt so sorry for Cindy - no one really seems to take into account that she's still mourning her mother. No wonder she's stroppy! And Alva was such a pain!
I wish there was a sequel so that I could see what happened after.

I studied this book for an English assignment at University. I found the book to be very informative, especially for children who live in the middle of a big city and have not had much experience of country life. This book gets rid of any stereotypical images that the children might have, and presents them with facts in a fun and imaginative way. The children will almost definitely want to visit a farm after they have read this.

I bought this to read to my 4 year old daughter a week after I delivered her stillborn sister.
I think it's beautifully written and explains everything in a very simply. Nothing is left out, there is even a description of the white coffin that the baby is placed in and it ends by showing the family having a pic-nic under their baby's tree.
However, my daughter had other ideas, she scowled all the way though it and declared at the end "I don't like that book, the baby dies. I didn't want the baby to die."
I left the book out for a few more days, but she said "Can you put the book away, I don't like it".
I just want parents to know, that although they may buy this book in good faith thinking that they ... Read More:
