Sir David Attenborough has has a hugely successful life by any standards. He has produced pioneering television, achieved high office at the BBC, is recognised as highly influential in his chosen field, has written numerous books, has been knighted, is instantly recognisable, has travelled extensively doing work he obviously loves.
It must have been difficult for him to decide how to start this book, an autobiography of his working life; How about opening it by describing the day he was knighted? Or the time he commissioned "Match of the Day", still going strong today? Or the moment he laughed as young Mountain Gorillas played around him, an image that entered the national consciousness when broadcast as part of the ground-breaking ... Read More:

The book is by Alastair Fothergill not David Attenborough who just writes the one page foreword, not that it matters too much as the text still contains interesting information with lots of good pictures. However the pictures are not superb, they are a silk finish rather than glossy making then look quite flat and one dimensional and the whole book looks like someone reined in the budget rather hard, not perhaps what one might expect from a book endorsed by the BBC. You are more likely to flick through the book than gaze and drool over the pictures and not long perhaps before you're standing the coffee cups on the book before relegating this one to that shelf with the others that you don't pick up so often. The DVD is a much better product if you still ... Read More:

This book is a dream come true with those in love with natural history. Exceptionally beautiful drawings and botanical prints. Buy it before it goes to paperback as the hardback really suits the content of this book.

My connection with this book is a long one as I first read it in the 1960's and I was pleased to see it back in print. One of the sponsors the trip was Brooke Bond and my late father-in-law was the Indian based representive of the company and looked after the group when they were in Delhi - their exploits are recorded in the book which includes an hilarious TV performance on Indian TV. In 1994 I brought the whole group together at Magdelene College Cambridge for a celebratory dinner at which it was intended for my father-in-law to meet up with them after 40 years but sadly he died just before the dinner took place. We pressed ahead and it was very interesting to meet all of the travellers who had not been together for many, many years. The book for me ... Read More:

Essentially 'Wild Borneo' equates to an illustrated list of the plants and animals of the island and in which regions they are found. Although it is of course impossible to mention every species, the book does a good job of covering most groups in reasonable detail.
The book begins with a section on the various habitats on the island and the main floral components of each. The second section is by far the largest and features extensive chapters on all the animal groups in varying amounts of detail. The book concludes with several small sections on human impact and conservation.
The big disappointment of this book is in fact the photographs. Although they show good profiles of the animals, they rarely feature any behaviour or character so ... Read More:

'Life in the undergrowth' can be read either as an accompaniment to the TV series or as a standalone book. There are sufficient additions and deviations from the series to allow you to further your knowledge, while still following the same basic route so that it can be read alongside watching it. At the same time it covers everything the series does and never mentions or reverts back to it, so you don't miss-out on anything if you never watched the show.
One of the most startling things about the book is its format. I was expecting something resembling an encyclopaedia with several mini-headings dotted about each page along with a small paragraph and picture. Instead I found that the book reads much like a novel. There is a chapter for each episode which ... Read More:

I am not a typical planty person and so after recieving this book as a present, I was not sure if I'd appreciate it. How wrong I was, it deals with many aspects of plants, such as there need to reproduce, to travel, to feed etc. But it looks at them as if they were an animal in there hunger to survive. Altogether an exceptional read, offering a beautiful way to understand plants.

I read this book in great detail and found it very out-standing. I have brought all David attenborough's books as I must admit they are all worth every penny. A man who has had 40 years of experience with mammals, birds, plants and fish, explains with great details about the wonder's of life on earth. In my opinion "The Blue planet" is the best book from this collection and a must buy for those interested of the life which lives on our Blue Planet. The illustrations are just amazing and it gave my great pleasure reading this book. Buy with confidence
