This book offers invaluable information about the house buying process and answered many of my questions, as well as offering hints and tips. It prepared me for everything from putting in an offer to getting over the shock of the survey results. It's layout means you can dip in and out easily as the sections are sub headed and the information is broken up into short paragraphs and bullet points.
If you are looking for advice on the state of the property market/how to add value etc then this isn't the book for you. This book is purely concerned with how to buy a house, as the title suggests. After reading it I felt confident about dealing with estate agents, vendors and solicitors. If you are buying your first home then this ... Read More:

The early part of this book is really absorbing, as the author relates how he raised merry hell behind the lines of the Japanese advance down the Malayan peninsula. He blew up trains, he blew up railway lines, he blew up bridges and he also learnt to stuff bamboo stems full of explosive and leave them innocently lying in the road, where he blew them up remotely when a suitably-laden Japanese truck drove over them. He would then mow down a few of the survivors and disappear into the jungle.
After not very long, however, and of course after the fall of Singapore, his access to sabotage weaponry disappeared. At that point, at liberty in occupied Malaya, he was able to do very little and he spent the next three years essentially living rough ... Read More:

I totally agree with all that the previous reviewer has written. As an absolute beginner I found this book really useful and ended up reading it in the bath because the articles within it were so interesting (usually I'm a strictly picture viewing reader of craft books). I have tried several of the projects contained within this book and even the first attempts came out at a good standard due to clear instructions and illustrations. I can highly recommend making the vintage button necklace, whenever I wear it people always ask if I can make them one too!

When I purchased this book I was not sure whether I would like it or not because I had reservations over who the author was and his connections to the Marlboroughs and whether this would impart bias but I need not have worried. It is an enjoyable well written book which has an interesting narrative and some good analysis and it does not try to bore you with detail. All in all a very good book.

Don't expect this book to provide many answers. If you have an old Haynes manual it will probably be as much use to you as the general fault finding and repair proceedures are the same for most cars. This manual is very much only for routine servicing. There are very few technical diagrams or useful photographs. There are some useful wiring diagrams but virtually nothing on the gearbox. It seems to assume that anything beyond simple servicing is now a garage job.
