Chapter by chapter explanations of the whole of development - other books (wolpert) are also very good but don't necessarily cover as much, although obviously this book does not cover everything to huge depth either, it is still perhaps better than others. When I was an undergraduate student this was the recommended text book (an earlier edition), now that I'm working as a post graduate in a lab we have the most recent edition and find it to be superb for referencing matters that we don't know much about. The book covers all the major model organisms with reasonable clarity and is pretty good for distinguishing what really is known and what is/was speculation. Strongly recommend.

As the title suggests, I am of the opinion that many textbooks are just a little too much hard work. Whilst I accept that a lot of information has to be crammed into them, the way many of them are presented makes me shiver. Not so this one. I am studying part time for a BSc in Life Sciences at present and wanted a good all rounder biology textbook. So I forked out for this. At the time, the price seemed a little steep but it has proved to be worth the money. The book is well set out with lots of pictures and illustrations to lighten up the chapters and make the book a little easier to digest. As the title suggests, I am of the opinion that many textbooks are just a little too much hard work.
