I was sadly dissapointed with this book. The designs are a bit basic. There are one or two designs that I might copy but that's all. Many of the cakes are finished in butter cream which is vey messy for children
and I think the British are more likely to prefer an icing finish. This might be suitable for someone who's never made a cake before but I found it uninspiring.

Another fine Australian Women's Weekly book, this covers deceptively simple Malaysian recipes.
These aren't meals that have dozens of ingredients but taste of nothing, they're fragrant and richly spiced treats. The book is laid out simply, with mouth-watering photographs for each recipe, and straightforward cooking instructions. The pages are fairly small too, so you can have it open on the worktop without losing a lot of space. Ideal when you've forgotten what goes in next!
I have to mention in closing that the satay recipe is the best I've ever tasted, and the easiest to make - it's all prepped in advance, then it's just a case of adding to the pan at the right time. Pretty much foolproof!

This is easily the best one-pot cookbook I have found. So far I have tried 11 recipes and all were easy to follow and the results were delicious (I am no domestic goddess). The information on cooking ahead and freezing is invaluable, especially for someone who lives alone and cannot be bothered to try and reduce the ingredients in a recipe for 8 people into something edible for one. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
