My mother having pressed me to read this book, I finally got round to it early this year. Thank God I did.
I cannot begin to put into words how much this book touched me. Vera Brittan must be an inspiration to all women; a strong and determined character who, despite losing almost everything to the War, did not give up. Vera Brittan was a young, ambitious girl growing up pre-war with aspirations to go to University (something uncommon for the day.) She succeeded in getting into Oxford to study English. Then the War came crashing into her life, and Vera's brother and friends get called up to fight. She herself finds her place, working as a nurse first in London, then abroad. This is the second of Vera Brittain's testaments, and it is the story of a woman with a great capacity for friendship and a desire for social justice. Winifred Holtby was born in Yorkshire, joined the WAAC during WW1, completed her university education at Oxford (where she met Vera) after the war, and worked as a journalist and novellist in London until her early death in 1935. Winiferd and Vera lived together in London during the 1920's and after Vera's marriage, she shared a house with Vera and her family. Winifred, as a single woman, was in great demand by her family whenever there was a crisis, ( by Vera as well). This is one of the aspects of a single woman's life that comes through very strongly. The letter writers concerned are four young men, friends from public school who were all to die in the Great War: Roland Leighton, ( 1915) Geoffrey Thurlow, (1917), Victor Richardson (1917) , and Edward Brittain (1918). Their story has been told in Vera Brittain's war time memoir from 1933, `Testament of Youth', and the whole project seems to be a spin-off from the revival of the book's popularity as from the late 1970's: Though 'Testament of Youth' was virtually forgotten by the time of Brittain's death in 1970, it seems that her new generation of admirers can not get enough of her work, as her novels come back into print and diaries are published. The personal papers of four leading characters from `Testament of Youth' are now placed in the public domain. ... Read More:
