The first book I read that explains the health benefits of veganism without falling into the moralistic view.
Packed with all you need if you are to make an informed choice, supported by real data, and be able to explain to others why you eat what you eat.

I have been a vegetarian for 7 years, but this is the first nutrition book I've bought. It has taught me so many new facts about different foods and what nutrients they contain, nearly all plant foods contain protein, I always thought it was only nuts and legumes! This book is clear and well laid out. Its not too biased either, and just states the facts. It has plenty of clear tables comparing nutritional values of different foods, and tells you what pattern of nutrients you need to be healthy. It has chapters on protein, minerals (iron, zinc especially), calcium, vitamins from fruits and vegetables, vitamin B12, also info about the vegetarian diet for all stages of life. It provides examples of good daily food plans, and has some recipes at the back ... Read More:

The authors don't pretend there are no nutritional pitfalls in a vegetarian diet, instead pointing out areas of concern and how to deal with them. This includes not just obvious issues like B12 in a vegan diet, but also other critical and not always addressed issues such as riboflavin. For those who don't rely on dairy for their dietary calcium, non-dairy sources of calcium are not just listed, but there is detailed discussion of the dietary factors that both help and hinder calcium ... The book could be good for tips, if like the other reviewer, you have MANY food allergies & intolerances and it does have some good information on dietary problems, not just recipes - but many of the ingredients are very difficult to find in the UK (and so expensive if found). QUINOA seems to be in absolutely every recipe. Also required frequently are Xantham or guar gum, coconut oil, canola oil, safflower oil and chickpea flour. Occasionally included are amaranth, kuzu, sorghum and teff.
If you can easily get these ingredients, want to try them and can afford them this is the book for you. You could probably work out some alternative ingredients - but, um, that is probably mostly ... Read More:
