I gather that Mrs Ian Hislop's husband is none other than the Editor of Private Eye, which perhaps accounts for the reason why this book was published. As a piece of writing it has no merits and I have yet to meet anyone who, having read it, actually enjoyed it. It is a given that to get published these days you have to either be a journalist or be married to one.

I found this book to be really helpful. It is split into very accessible sections but I have to admit that I read it cover to cover in one sitting! The pictures are lovely and the advice is really sound and I have put a lot of it into practice with our 10 week old puppy and it has had very positive results. Highly recommended.

Totally agree with the 2 previous reviewers. Best cooking book I've ever come across. I'm a beginner cook and I find most cookery books are nice to look at but not very easy to follow. But this book is loaded with practical and delicious-looking recipes. The DVD contains short clips of basic cooking techniques, probably more useful for beginners. The pocket shopping list booklet is very handy when you go shopping, all ingredients and quantities for each recipe in one small book. I think experienced cooks will also enjoy the great variety of recipes covering everything from starters and snacks, mains and sides and cakes and desserts. Well recommended - I'm ordering another one for my niece!

I have bought a number of these types of books, read them and not given them to my daughter as they seemed "wrong". This one is the one I gave to her and it's pitched perfectly. My daughter is nearly 10. There was enough information but not too much. It is based around periods, hormones, spots and body changes. It touches on sex but not in detail and it satisfied my daughters light curiosity without me needing to move onto "the talk". She savoured what was in it and feels happy and confident about it all. She has even loaned it to friends. The font is good, the text has a modern chatty feel, it is a good book for girls aged 9-12. Recommended.

This book was recomended to me by Amazon because I had read books by Stig Larrson and Jo Nesbo. Both great authors. Unfortunatlely though I can't get past the dry childlike style of the narrative. 10-15 pages in I had to put the book down because I was bored rigid. Maybe it's just lost in translation or that I can't quite click with the Icelandic psyche.

Delia has fallen into the meat-eaters' trap of thinking she has to replace meat and fish with dairy products or eggs in the same quantities. If you used this book as your main source of recipes your chloresterol levels would go through the roof. There are whole sections on cheese and egg recipes and most of the others feature a lot of full-fat dairy products as well. You would also need a palatial kitchen to house the myriad of specialised ingredients and equipment required (no wonder that she has her own range of cookware).
I admit that some of the recipes are very delicious, if somewhat time-consuming to make, and the instructions are clearly written. However, as a vegetarian cook for a vegetarian family, I found a lot of it unapproachable.

I bought this book on the strength of its 5 star rating and the excellent reviews that others have left for it. It arrived this morning and I am delighted with it. In fact I've wasted a good hour pouring over it! It has really useful tips, clear instructions, practical advice (e.g. highlighting what can be done in advance and what kit & basic ingredients you should ideally have in your kitchen) and beautiful photography. An excellent book and I can't wait to throw my next drinks party to have a crack at some of the many tempting recipes - I just know they are going to wow & impress my guests.
I certainly wasn't disappointed and I'm sure you won't be either - and it would make a lovely gift, even for reasonably amateur cooks.

The BookDiary is a simple concept - it's a diary made especially for the enthusiastic reader.
Each week has its own page and room to write in your appointments for that day and you get enough, if not a huge amount of space for each day. There are also lots of blank pages for you to write in any other notes and pages to jot down the books that you've read and enjoyed in a particular month. Each month also has information on important dates and birthdays as well as highlighting several authors, their work, a small bio and some quotes. For people with particular interests, there are numerous lists of recommended reading to help you find your next book.
Overall it's beautifully presented so that it looks like a high quality paperback book. The images are varied and interesting ... Read More:
