This study guide weas invaluable to me when I was Doing Othello for my A.S levels as my techer was rubbish. thanks to this book though, it really clarified every aspect of the play for me. I definately would have been lost without it. So if you find Shakespeare a bit difficult to understand, getting this study guide (and those of the other plays) would deffinately be a great help to you.

I don't want to rain on the parade, but, while this is a truly great book because of its content, the production of the book is flawed enough to be problematic. The paper is much too thin, making it hard, at times, to read the text. This is especially difficult for the introductory essays, which run across the entire page width. (The text of the plays themselves is in single columns, not double, as often in complete Shakespeare editions.) So if you buy this sight unseen, as I did, be aware that your reading experience may not be optimal.

This work needs no introduction. Two star crossed lovers, divided by family feud, united by love, can ultimately only be together in death. The word "tragedy" was coined for it.

It is my favourite of Shakespeare's plays and is the original and best. There is nothing wrong with West Side Story or Shakespeare in Love or even William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet starring Leonardo di Caprio, but the pure essence of the Bard's poetry is here, in the original.

If it doesn't make you cry you have a heart of stone!

This book is incredibly boring.

This Shakespeare guy is way over-rated.

it is written in old English so you need an other book to simply translate it's text. In this day and age you would be insane to read this for fun. Rent a blu-ray disc or go to the cinema or something.

On the other hand if you are doing it for school then I guess you have to buy it.

I have read Hamlet, however it was not this edition. I have seen these editions in store and they are rather tatty looking, the paper is recycled so that's to be expected. These types of books suit people who are limited in cash perhaps about to board a plane and need something to read. If your a student, your teacher will have already have bought specific books prescribed by the examining board - if this is the case do so and purchase that copy because this does not have notes to explain language or anything.

The play itself is a wonderful piece of literature concerned by deception, political power, and action vs. inaction, perceived madness and religion. Before reading it (if you studying) you should get context about Denmark (where ... Read More:

In some respects I think it'd be rather presumptuous of me to attempt to review Shakespeare. Someone so well known and influential wouldn't benefit from my opinions on their work, plus there are more scholarly and concise reviews out there. But I can comment on these Arden versions. Of all the Shakespeare I've read I've always found the Arden copies to be well laid out and to have excellent commentary and notes on the text. They really add to your understanding of Shakespeares outstanding plays and introduce you to the depth in his work. They have superb paper quality and are bound well, withstanding repeated readings and intensive study. For your collection of Shakespeare you can't do much better than Arden publications, some are quite hard to get ... Read More:

I brought this book to help me on my AS King Lear coursework. It was such a help! It had all the major themes and ideas as well as language and act-by-act notes. It has some complex ideas but easy to work through. The feature I like the most is that in the margins of the books it has further reading or websites to go to for more information on the topic you're looking at. This study guide is a must!

I decided to read "Othello" after enjoying "Hamlet",another one of Shakespeare's celebrated tragedies. I must admit that I did not enjoy "Othello" quite as much however. It's plot is quite complicated; labyrinthine at times, and much of it's language is obscure and hard to follow . The play concerns itself with the endeavours of the thoroughly malevolent and evil Iago to destroy the Moorish Venetian general Othello, his boss. He does so by poisoning Othello against his innocent wife Desdemona. He convinces him that his wife is having an affair with Othello's deputy (and Iago's rival) Cassio. Othello takes the bait and duly obliges Iago by becoming filled up with hatred of his wife which eventually leads to a tragic ending and a series of untimely deaths ... Read More:
