I have read every one of Bernard Cornwells Books, had this book on pre order and looked forward so much to the books publication. I can only say, I was so dissapionted, I couldn't wait to get to the end and put it down.
400 pages, only two battles and it really didn't hold my interest at all, I can't express my dissapointment enough.
I must be the odd one out.

What an excellent Tudor mystery - Sansom really brings Tudor life 'back to life'! If you enjoy grizzly murder mysteries with twists and turns then this is for you. It is well up to the standard of the previous 3 Shardlake novels and we can only hope the fourth one will not be too long in arriving! Read and enjoy - one to immerse onself in on a cold winter night!

I have often been critical of Iggulden's work - especially this recent series. However, that criticism has been stopped dead in its tracks. This is a stunning book, and perhaps one of the best I've ever read.

Iggulden has finally worked out what he is so good at - describing battles in a breathless and uncompromising fashion. Most of this book is a series of tremedous battles/sieges - and when he does come out of this, he keeps the less interesting interludes brief and concise. One teeny observation which does annoy me - his total fixation with one word - "wince". Surely he can find a substitute for it!

As I have said before, Iggulden will never be a writer of great sophistication, nor will he be a conveyor of intricate plotting ... Read More:

Philippa Gregory is one of only a handful of writers I will buy in hardback as I just can't wait for the paperback to come out but I was in for a disappointment with The Other Queen. I found it very slow and it didn't engage me at all. Dotting between the various characters was repetitive and unlike other Philippa Gregory novels where I haven't been able to put them down, I read this one over a period of several weeks on and off, for me it just didn't seem to get going. She is a brilliant writer but I was sadly disappointed with this book and only wish she would go back to writing stunning novels like The Queen's Fool and Virgin Earth.

This is an absolutely fantastic book which I borrowed from a friend some years ago. Having recently read the follow up (World without End - brilliant too!), I really felt that I had to re-read Pillars of the Earth. If you order this book, before reading please check the page numbering. I have just reached page 464 and going onto the next page, the storyline did not seem to be making any sense! I then realised that the next page was actually 561. After checking the rest of the page numbering, the book continued up to 608, with the next page after that being 513 (hence missing pages 464-513). Not Amazon's fault at all - how could they know that the printers have got it wrong - but I am now bereft as I can't continue the story until I get a new copy. I may well ... Read More:

Why cant Conn Iggulden write any faster? Have to say, another triumph. I love the way he writes, you feel like you are part of the whole journey. It's clever as well, because the heroes aren't heroes, there just as nasty as the bad guys, however they are your bad guys! Going to be depressed again now waiting ages for his next one :-(

This is a superb trilogy, very readable and probably more appealing to a male readership, with the leading characters being predominantly male and a lot of the story being about battles and "The Great Conqueror". I started to read them having watched the film 'Mongol' and I strongly recommend the film to anyone who is enjoying these books. Highly recommended.

Books : Requiem (Brethren Trilogy 3)

Requiem (Brethren Trilogy 3)

by: Robyn Young

Best Selling > Books > Historical

I was bursting waiting for this to be released having read the first two books and absolutely loved them. This was a period in history which was not covered in depth at school, and it was totally fascinating to discover more about what actually went on, when it is often purely portrayed as romantic and heroic, and ignores the brutality and sacrifice which was always present. In Will Campbell, Ms Young has created a character that you love but sometimes want to slap to break him out of his stubborn streak, but this partly makes the reader not want to put the book down and can't wait to see what happens next. He has more adventures and near death scrapes than all the James Bond put together, but you go with the flow being so wrapped up in his story. Agree with previous reviewer re the description ... This is one of the best PG tudor novels and i couldnt put it down. I love the way it deals with the little known older brother of Henry, Arthur and the way Catalina (Kathrine) is so determined. The way the book is written makes it really hard to not sympaphise with her and if you dont cry in the last chapter you have a heart of stone. The only problem with this is that you cant read it before you go to bed becasue you will HAVE to sat up all night to finnish it!

I picked this book up while on tour and read it within a couple of weeks. At first I thought it had potential with the prologue showing the Civil war and focusing on one of the communist soldiers Bernie and then the air raids on London and how the people of London coped with this. However once the character goes to Madrid the plot slows right down and then doesn't seem to pick up again until the end and the plot twist, which I won't ruin for you.
I think the book is worth a read just for the historical value. It does show how bad the civil war was in Spain and if like me you don't know much about that part of history it does explain a lot.
By far not the best book I have read but still enjoyable
