Growing up with a Chinese mother who cooks the best chinese, I have developed a very good palate. I consider myself a foodie and relish in cooking, but always go back to the basics, which is Chinese.
This book is an excellent source of inspiration for people who can cook and also easy enough for beginners. A review here said the food was bland and I beg to differ. Growing up in Hong Kong, the Chinese I know relied on the freshest ingredients to deliver the best flavours. Spices were used minimally. Only when you travel inland to Szechuan do you truly encounter the fiery stuff.

We went to the East Midland Food show this year where Anjum was doing cookery demonstrations. She is passionate about her cooking and explains her methods and ingredients simply and effectively.
I've made a few of the dishes in here and found inspiration for some of my own based around the core recipes in this book. I'd recommend the yogurt based curry - very healthy with little fat or oil and very tasty. A winner with all the family.

I've watched the TV series with interest so I thought I'd take the plunge and buy Anjums new book. There are a lot of new recipes I've not heard of before in here but the first one I tried was the good old vindaloo. I was a little skeptical because there didn't seem to be a lot of ingredients but as it turned out it made a delicious curry. These proberbly aren't pure authentic Indian recipes but that's not what the book is claiming, after all the series is called Indian food made easy.
I've bought several so called Indian cook books that failed to deliver but this is not one of them. I'm definately going to be hunting out other books by the same author

What a brilliant and talented man. His dishes are easy to make and the good thing about all of the dishes in the book is that you can get the ingredients even in your local supermarket, if you have no good markets near you. The recipies when cooked taste like your mum's, grandmother's and if you lucky to have tasted ypur great granny's cooking then its like a blast from the past on your taste buds.
For All those young and old fellow british caribbeans that have lost the way and art of cooking due to whatever reasons, will find their way inside levi Roots Reggae Reggae Cookbook.
This is probably one of the best caribbean cook books out, and is far from intimidating as many other books can be.
It's absolutely a great book; A must buy.

As with Tessa Kiros' previous books, this one is absolutely gorgeous. Gold-edged pages and many, many shots of Venice and its people, especially around Carnival time make it a delight to leaf through.
So far, so good, and if you know someone who loves Venice or has had a special time there, this would be a good gift. But I doubt how much actual cooking I'll be doing from this book...octopus, anchovies, special Italian sausage and prosecco feature highly on the ingredients list, none of which I find particularly appealing or easy to lay my hands on.
It's certainly not the family-friendly fare of Falling Cloudberries or Apples for Jam. Nice to read but I think I'll stick to her earlier works for cooking.

The scrapbooker in me loves this book for the pure visual experience I got as soon as I opened my Amazon parcel.
Certainly not your average cookbook - it really is set out like Maw Broons very own recipe book from magazine clippings, scribbles & doodles from the kids, tea stains and squished spiders between the pages! This by no means detracts from the very real recipes - good proper recipes that the family will eat not the fancy shmancy stuff that looks pretty but wouldn't fill a gnats belly.
I actually bought this for my sister for Christmas - purely for the nostalgia value as she collected the Broons and Oor Wullie books as a kid. I've now told her she isn't getting it unless she buys me one in return! :D
This was on show at the Good Food Show last week beside the original - Maw Broon's Cookbook. Same kind of nostalgic appeal - days oot ! Cookin' the catch o' the day, some really basic stuff too. Recipes not as old as the first cookbook perhaps, but real Broons humour and great memorabilia tucked in to the pages - a 'must-have' if you got Maw Broon's Cookbook. Compared with other cookbooks on the go this year, this is great value.

I have to say that this is the first ever cookbook I've owned & was inspired by watching Gordon on The F Word. It's pretty good, although it isn't my most used cookbook in truth (bit too much fish for my liking. Worth a look though, but if you're looking for more inspired recipes, I'd look elsewhere in my humble opinion.
I'd give it an 8 out of 10 (I do quite like Gordon, but since I've got into cooking properly, I've realised he's not quite as good as I thought he was).

So I took this book into work to show the other chefs along with my newly aquired copy of Alinea by Grant Achatz, Wondering which would be the most popular.
I'm sure ripailles has turned out better although the photography and the content is better in Alinea, You probably would never be able to make anything from this book, And that is where ripailles wins you could make every recipe in it without too many problems and the photography fits in nicely with the French rustic food.
So I will definitely try some of these recipes! One other reason to buy it is it only cost's £10.00 from Amazon at the moment (nov 08) and it has the most amazing cover on it which is padded, Thats what made me want it when I first saw it in the bookshop.

This book changed my life!! OK, slight exaggeration but it did wonders for my cooking confidence, which means i cook a lot more now, and that can't be a bad thing. First of all the recipes are very varied & delicious. Also importantly (for me at least..!), all the 'work' is in the prep, which of course you can take all the time you like over (though it needn't take long). The actual cooking tends to be pretty quick and easy stir frying, so no panicking during cooking. The ingredients needed are pretty easy to come by (fresh vegetables; chillies, lemongrass; soy & fish sauce; soba noodles; dashi etc.). The final reason i love these recipes is that you feel really good for having had such a healthy meal, without it tasting 'too healthy'..!
