Have had every edition and I still carry a copy in my bag. Anyone doing acute takes who thinks they don't need to reflect on some aspects of some cases will come to grief. I am reassured when I see junior docs carrying a well worn copy.

This book has been an invaluable resource for general medical study since my 3rd year of medical school. It is comprehensive, easy to read, with excellent pictorials. It is visually easy on the eye and allows easy reference for study. I would recommend it for any medical student from 3rd year onwards and for use in the early years of a medical career.

This book is a great concise reference book- you can dip in and out of it very easily, and each topic is very clearly indicated so you don't get lost in the tool print or run into finding a topic, only not to be able to decipher it because it relies on a preamble 20 pages long... None of that here. 2 pages per topic and you're done...
It covers both conditions as well as treatments- something not covered as well elsewhere, or perhaps as independently.
The AaG series you either love or hate- I am not that keen, but I must admit that I think this book is useful and contains a surprising level of detail. That said, you aren't going to approach this book looking to answer the niggling little questions that you face on the wards- as this is ... Read More:

Those who are truly bipolar ( type 1 or 2) cannot fail to identify with this book. I felt reassured after reading it that I was not alone and also felt confident that there are many things I can do (in addition to taking medication) to help manage my condition. For example, the book speaks of the importance of circadian rythyms and how to maintain a regular sleep/wake cycle. I think this should be absolutely compulsory reading for those affected by bipolar- whether as a "patient" or as a carer/ family member. I also think this would aide doctors- particularly the psychiatrists to think about the human side of the condition, too. BUY it!

I bought this book a week ago and my confidence in diagnosis has increased ten fold. Not only can you pick the symptom you think is most relavent and look up what could be causing it, you also get a list of conditions with associated features, and how the condition is confirmed.
In real terms when on for example A&E, you get a patient with difuse hair loss (I had no idea where to start on this one) and you get given options of cytotoxic drugs , iron deficiency, sever illness, hypogonadism and recent pregnancy. You would then see what the symptoms of each are, and how you would confirm each.
It made the situation of coming away from a patient totally confused much easier. I am also better at coming up with differentials now. ... Read More:

I had a copy of this book at uni but didn't truly appreciate it until my first nightshifts as a houseofficer... The book contains a wealth of up to date info about medical emergencies in an easy to read and understand format, and is probably useful for all medical staff no matter what specialty or grade - FY1s and 2s will thank their lucky stars for this book, as will more experienced doctors who need a review of seat-of-your-pants medicine. Those grim nightshifts when your senior is stuck in A&E and you're faced with a patient as sick as a dog will seem less intimidating thanks to this addition to the OH series.
it can also just about fit in the back pocket of your scrubs!

It all sounds fine but once you've spent a fortune on treatment and nothing happens, the implication is it's all your fault.
It's difficult for them to go wrong on that basis. The fact is it did absolutely nothing for me but cost me an awful lot of money.
Reverse therapists used to talk about clinical trials that will prove it works. They have gone very quiet about that lately. I think I know why.
