Books : The Selfish Gene

The Selfish Gene

The author writes about living things as if the gene is the animal and the animal is simply a seed for the gene. He basically turns life inside out. It's a powerful mind tool to get a different perspective on life but don't get too carried away with the idea. The whole theory of evolution is valuable in understanding the world but like a lot of science it starts to become too difficult to use. So in conclusion I don't believe that the author has discovered the secret of life, he just has another way of looking at things that you may find useful. It should be one of the books you have read.

I read this one after the 30th anniversary of The Selfish Gene, and though Dawkins states in his intro that he regards this as his best work, I personally prefer the slightly expanded Selfish Gene which takes into account his extended phenotype theory. I guess one further point on this is that there is a lot of repetition between the material in the two works too! He also states that this is aimed at his academic colleagues rather than as a book for the layman but I found the science to be pretty straightforward and commonsense and only needed to check the glossary at the back for about half a dozen words. However, other than those points its pretty much faultless and the plot will keep you gripped to the bitter denoument... I'm certainly looking ... Read More:

This book is a mixture of science and fiction. The science is good and the fiction gives a reasonable possible account of the lives of the 7 daughters.
The main focus of the book is that only 7 women were the direct ancestors of 95% ofthe current population of Europe and those of European descent throughout the world as determined by mitochondrial which is passed only in the female line.
The booktraces the origins of 7 women and where the various groups dominate eg. Velda in Spain,Helena in France to Jasmine in the Middle East.
The science and the fiction are welded together to make a fascinating story although I would have liked more science.

Read for interest rather than serious study.
Can't say I enjoyed it as much as some other reviewers - it is like the curates' egg -good in parts.

Loosely structured as a romp through the human genome - one gene from each chromosome. At times the author seems happy to slip the bonds of this literary structure to follow his enthusiasms and interests.

Best bits - chapters on junk DNA, cancer, and gene therapy.

I still find it odd that scientists can talk dispassionately and abstractly about the statistical results of procedures which involve injecting diseased tissues into monkey's brains. Indeed the author gets most excited when defending the `rights' of individuals to chose to eat potentially prion-infected meat products (or medicines) ... Read More:

This book is definitely not just for dummies. It goes into a lot of detail and is reasonably up-to-date. However having never studied this subject before I found it really hard work to read. The problem is it jumps across a wide range of topics and you are required to remember and be able to cross-link topics on different pages. A book with a logical top-down structure would be much easier to digest.

This book is perfect for anyone interested in genetics and the origin of humans. It explains all terminolgy simply then expands upon it thus even if you have little or no knowledge of genetics or biology you can read and enjoy it.

The book while concentrating on the scientific information gathered by the project also explores the personnal discoveries individuals have made by entering the project and the subsequent DNA analysis, making it far more interesting a text than ones which consist of only science.

The author's enthusiasm for the project leaps off the page. I read this book in 24 hours and absolutely couldn't put it down. Would highly recommend to anyone.

If you are interested in the field of epigenetics, if you want to read a book that carries on where Bruce Lipton's Biology of Belief leaves off, this book is for you.
If you want to read how our beliefs and emotions can shape our biology, this book is for you.
If you want to understand the science behind energy psychology, this book is for you.
If you want an easy to read, without being patronising, book that explores the ever-diminishing gap between science and spirituality, this book is for you.
If you are a narrow-minded Darwinist or neo-Darwinist, and/or are wedded to Crick's dogma of DNA, this book is probably not for you!

Where are the diagrams? Within this book there are some quite complicated descriptions - e.g. of the developing foetus or cellular machinery - that would have benefited greatly from a diagram. That old adage "A picture paints a thousand words" isn't an old adage for nothing... And quoting French without giving a translation seems to be another one of the author's sins. Also, though unavoidably, this book is chock-full of horribly long Latin names for different syndromes and disorders that can be a bit tiring after a while. Having said that, Leroi writes wonderfully and is a welcome change from the often turgid prose of other popular science writers. Overall I think that I learned a lot from this book and I enjoyed it too. Read it and be amazed!

FYI: This is an abridged, simplified version of Watson's book, edited for people learning to read English. I made the mistake of ordering it (from another source) without realizing this and had to send it back. The full version is ISBN 0140268774. Penguin should make it clearer on the front cover that this is not the full original text!
