I've had this book for a little while, I loved reading the experiments even though I didn't try them. I've put the book aside for my grandchildren, who at 7 and 6 are embryonic 'Blue Peter kids' who are just going to love having a go at the experiments contained within. They don't own a hamster, thankfully and the springer spaniel is probably a bit on the large side for fossilisation.
Weak jokes aside, this book - and the other New Scientist publications - are an absolutely marvellous way of engaging everyone with science. If science was the subject that had you sitting looking out of the window at the back of the class, idly hoping that the teacher would catch their long hair / tie in the Bunsen burner, this is the book that will show ... A lot of the recipes can be got from the web but for the pictures and the recipes themselves buy yourself the book (or better still, buy for he/she who lurks in the kitchen area). The chocolate brownie recipe is a personal favourite featuring their inspired use of raspberries and (as they keep for ages) you don't really have to share them with anyone else.

This book is wonderful, imaginative, easy to read and understand. I also found it entertaining, for a 'non cook' that is praise indeed! Although I am no great cook, I do keep chickens for eggs, the wife wont let me eat them, (yet!)I do grow lots of stuff, and much of this is credited to the Author. A man who cherishes his food and where it comes from, and how. This book comes close to being my Bible

You know the drill, you see a cookbook in the shop, pick it up and browse through, see about 3 or 4 recipes that grab you and head for the checkout... Then, when you get home and cook a couple you find the rest of the book overly complicated and ultimately it gets tucked away with the rest of the Gordon's, Nigella's etc etc to gather dust. Not so with the latest offering from Mr Oliver... I've bought most of Jamie's books and I've tried a fair few of his recipes over the years, but this book contains the best selection yet in my opinion. I actually bought this particular one for my husband as he'd promised 2008 would be the year he finally learnt to cook more than beans on toast! But I've also found it really comprehensive and easy to follow too. Our ... Read More:

I was worried that this wouldnt work for me. I have smoked for 5 years, and have tried to stop maybe 4 times for differing lengths of time. I would be proud of days that I went a day without a fag; it showed strength of willpower i suppose.
I read the 1 star reviews about this book, and they confirmed what I felt must be true all along - this must be too good to be true. What I now believe having read the book, and extinguished the final cigarette, is that these people do not want to give up. No book, no program, no person in this world is going to make you stop smoking - except yourself.
So the way in which this book works. Well, as a smoker, you are aware of why you shouldn't smoke; i.e. the disadvantages. Smokers don't ... Read More:

A wonderful collection of animal miscellany. It is only let down by an absence of references and the fact that one wishes that they covered more animals.

I read the reviews and decided to buy the book based on the high proportion of 5* ratings. I was not disappointed!
The book is the size of an average paperback, has a protective clear plastic sleeve, glossy pages, stunning photographs & great summaries on key facts of interest about each bird - definitely the best £7.99 I've spent in a long time!

This childrens book was one of the best books my twin 4 year olds really enjoyed and participated.English being their second language and mums first I wanted to introduce and extend their vocabulary.I find songs very successful in doing this but the combination of the book and CD was a success story as it combined image and sound..Magnificent art work ,the dragon theme a favourite with the boys and the music well...brilliant ,so easy for them to pick up the words and soothing sounds.Highly recommended for young children in general ,great gift idea and nice to see some things dont change in 35 years.

This book will give handy hints and tips when undertaking any domestic DIY project.
It is not the most comprehensive manual but is great for simple reference, enabling those with a view to further investigation to seek answers elsewhere - hence 4/5

After seeing the good reviews above I feel somewhat guilty about writing a less than glowing one. One of the main purposes of a dictionary is to fill in the gaps in vocabulary. However this dictionary has failed me on several occasions. Try to find the word 'discombobulate' and you will fail miserably. This is not the most obscure word in the English language and if I can't find a word I don't know what's the point in the dictionary?
