'Baking has always been one of my greatest joys. I have such happy memories of my sister and I when we were little standing on kitchen chairs so that we could help Mum make biscuits or buns for the family. Even today, the wonderful warm aromas ... Read More:

Such a great little book! There are a lot of recipes for a very decent price here, and they work!No entertaining anecdote to introduce the recipes, true, but then there are quite a lot of books which do that elsewhere, I personally find the format of the book as well as the number of great recipes presented quite handy as I can take it with me when I go away. Well worth buying if you enjoy baking.

This is an excellent book and one of the best about baking. I've made lots of the recipes and they've all turned out well. The photos of the finished items look inviting and inspiring. I think that the various writers of recipe have areas of cooking that they particularly enjoy and the books on that topic are their best and I feel that Mary Berry likes baking.

My husband bought me this book for Christmas and I haven't looked back. The recipes are great and exclude the sugar and skimmed milk powder nonsense that came with the recipe book for my machine. Every loaf has come out perfectly (I have a Panasonic SD253) - I have even braved the free-form ones using the dough programme and had great results (The Italian loaf is to die for). On the rare occasions we buy bread now, we notice just how sweet it is, and just how many alarming ingredients there are listed on the packaging! I can't recommend it highly enough.

This book is simply beautiful. The photos are wonderful. The recipes are simple and an inspiration. I love this book because it shows that something as simple as a cupcake can lots of fun for children and those who simply refuse to grow-up. I think this book would make a great present.

I've only recently started having a go at making my own bread - and by that I mean a couple of weeks ago! However, I decided to invest in a couple of books so I would be able to make something different as well as basic plain everyday bread. And man am I glad I did it!
The book arrived less than a week ago and I've done nothing ever since other than make bread!
All the recipes are very clear, easy to understand and the sheer variety of them left me gobsmacked.
If you're thinking about getting this book, just do it! You won't regret it! I'm certainly glad I bought it.

Oh, at last, Michel's definitive text on pastry. And that's just what it is. A joy from start to finish, with absolutely scrumptious, classy recipes, alongside authoritative, yet accessible techniques on making pastry, including two kinds of puff: classic and rough, depending on what time you have. If you lack self-belief in the pastry-making department, this soon-to-be cookbook classic will arm you with all the confidence and skills you need.

I bought this book on a whim and have just completed my fifth cake and am in the process of devising my sixth cake - the pictures and instructions are brilliant, I had never iced a cake before and now feel competent enough to make them for people other than family! Would highly recommend this, and looking at other peoples reviews am going to buy book 2! Well worth it.

Before I bought this book I had a very limited number of dishes I could cook, and, as you have probably guessed from other reviews, I now feel that I'm an expert baker and I am baking at least twice a week.
After borrowing this book I couldn't wait to get my own copy. The recipes are clear and simple and the extra information about the properties of each ingredient is very useful, but you don't need to fully understand it all to enjoy using this book. There are a large number of suggested recipe variations too, with lots of scope to experiment.
If you buy this book it'll be the best £6 you'll spend today and you'll get lots of praise from friends and colleagues at parties and meetings.
