This is an interesting and readable history of our country since the Second World War marred (pun intended) by a liberal/left-wing bias. Andrew Marr deals with a number of topics and this book is neither political nor social history but contains bits of each and more.
Much of the book is a re-hash of information that I had already gathered from elsewhere but some topics were new to me. For example, Andrew Marr spent some time discussing the rise of pop music and how this and the fashion industry seems to have originated mainly from people who went to art school rather than e.g. university or technical college. What a great, fun and manageable way to remember the most salient points of British history that we've all forgotten from school. It takes all the boring bits out and covers history from Roman Britain to the second world war. It's easy to dip in and out of and the perfect accompaniment to the brilliant I Before E that I bought last year. This book makes history fun!

This is an excellent 'by the bed' book for dipping in and out of. Each section has a generous selection of interesting gems and more bizarre nuggets about the capital that will make any reader an instant London Bore or a valued member of any pub-quiz team (admittedly only for the London questions!). Certainly a book worth having even if you don't have a huge thirst for knowledge about London - this will gently change that without you even noticing.

There are already many studies of the Black Death, The Peasants' Revolt and detailed scholarly works on this period of history but this book is quite original and should appeal to a wide readership. The use of the present tense works so well and helps to conjure up a graphic picture of the times. The author draws on a great deal of other studies and develops it into a vibrant overview of what it might have been like to live in this century. I loved it!

Alison Weir has really made history come to life in this fantastic book. The opulent and at times barbaric Tudor age comes vividly to life with the telling of each of Henry VIII's wives' stories. It is all told very movingly and you really feel that you know these women and Henry VIII himself.
If only history were taught like this in schools - I for one would have got a lot more out of it. Highly recommended. >>More Details |

As a life long Londoner and a person well read in history this book was just up my street.
It was a well written book packed with all sorts of fascinating details. For the most part I enjoyed reading it although it could occasionally be long winded and tedious. >>More Details |

I bought this book to fill gaps in my historical knowledge and the introduction mentions that the contents are for everyone who is interested in history but frightened of the fog! It lifts the fog completely, is beautifully written, concise and easy to follow putting history in a chronological perspective.
I am still enjoying dipping in and out of its excellent selection of events and thoroughly recommend it. >>More Details |

The author of this book, Sir Roy Strong, former Director of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, is also a broadcaster, and has written a number of bestselling books which include The Story of Britain, The Cult of Elizabeth and The Spirit of Britain.
This book attempts to narrate the complex history and development of the English parish church "...from the first buildings erected in Anglo-Saxon times to its uncertain future in the twenty-first century." I can't comment on the book since I returned it immediately. Amazon must have had this lying around in a filthy warehouse: it arrived filthy with top and bottom spine well bashed and the wrap-around (with the boat drawing) well worn. All credit to Amazon though that their returns process is excellent. I notice that in the 10 days since I bought it, Amazon have increased the price by 10p! Unusual for old stock (the hardback is obviously out of print)! Anyway, if you think you've sourced the hardback version at a good price, maybe think again. I'm off to pay more at Borders, but at least I know I'm getting a pristine copy.
