The recent 90th anniversary of the end of the Great War spurred me to seek out some literature on the subject. My mother's father fought at Ypres and Arras, and was invalided home after a mustard gas attack. I was only 10 years old when he died, but I wish I could have talked to him about his experiences. This book gives a potted history of each year of the war followed by accounts of various survivors who were interviewed in the 1970's. I aim to read more of the Forgotten Voices series to further my knowledge. I received Harry Patch's The Last Fighting Tommy in the post today and look forward to reading his highly acclaimed account of his time in the trenches.

First the good points. Jared Diamond writes excellently and makes some very good arguments, his humanity and morality is evident throughout the book. The later part of the book, which highlights many of the modern worlds more repugnant acts (especially on genocide) is a masterpiece in the critique of human barbarity and it's attempted justifications. Though there is no criticism of Israel's 'ethnic cleansing', which is a bit of a disappointment. Now for the criticism. Jared Diamond seems to have at best a rudimentary understanding of evolution and natural selection, and some of his statements don't stand up to even the most cursory reflection. For example he states 'The winner takes the losers land, sometimes also the losers women, and thus the loser's ... Read More:

Just to say that this book has you gripped from beginning to end and is recommended by most who have an interest in the culture of Gypsies. It is a book that enlightens you to the sensitivities of the gypsy culture and also has you in tears at the infliction of inhumane treatment towards a people who retain the way of life that most of us do not experience. Prejudice and intolerance from various barbaric dictators to the almost racist slur that come from everyday folk.
It is also interesting to learn about Roma language and how it cannot be recorded and is hard to capture as the language changes over the globe.

It is a good book and one of my most memorable reads. To understand the traveller culture then read this book. Another good book I had ... Read More:

Quite honestly, having been living in Denmark for near enough a year, I had put this little book to one side, I'd read a few pages and thought "this can't be right, its judgemental and generalistic".
I picked it up the other day, read a bit, to pass a minute or two, of course I read the lot.
It is worryingly enlightening, with same effect as turning a light on in a room, you get the detail, but must not go and tell the other person in the room that they have spinach on their teeth. Of course a Dane would never have spinach on their teeth, (they must carry a personal grooming kit, even the car mechanics are spotlessly clean).
A must read, but to benefit, read it after experiencing a bit first, then you will get the full effect, that is except the ... Read More:

Human

We live in a rural village in German-speaking Switzerland, and I teach in a prestigious international school nearby.

When I saw this book in the only English bookshop for miles around I wanted it more than any other book I have ever seen!

The pictures are glorious, the content so very well thought out and easy to reference that I can honestly say that I LOVE this book!

I learn about all aspects of human history, and for me, most importantly, the "human condition" from a not so distant perspective.

I think that this is a book which promotes International-mindedness, wonder and humility at the ways we as human inhabitants live differently but are uniquely bound together.

This book has made an open-minded ... Read More:

Having recently finished this book, how do I find another book that grips the reader as well as "Last of the Nomads". The language used was realistic and not over flowery as used by some journalist/authers, the landscape and main characters were held firmly central.
It was not until I had finished the book that I began to appreciated the amount lines that had been given over to the detailed description of the journey into the desertland of Western Australia. Having travelled through Western Australia myself I can say that the auther has used the middle section of the book well to bring to the reader just how dry and isolated these two people must have been.
In conclusion, it was not only a wonderfully successful mission it must be one of the greatest love stories ... Read More:

For a good many schoolchildren [too many, IMV], the history of Britain begins with Julius Caesar crossing the Channel. Confronted by resistance by the "blue people", he forcefully pushed the Island Kingdom into the historical arena. This outlook is regrettably shortsighted, as Chris Stringer makes vividly clear in this stunning account of pre-historic Britain. Although the first early human finds didn't occur there, the concept of "Stone Age" was vigorously debated in Britain as the artefacts and fossils emerged in view, particularly in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. Moreover, it was British scholars like John Hutton and Charles Lyell who took the lead in extending the age of the Earth. That extension led to speculation and investigation of who and what had come before, demolishing ... Read More:

Books : Ethnography: Principles in Practice

Ethnography: Principles in Practice

by: Martyn Hammersley, Paul Atkinson
1994
Best Selling > Books > Ethnography and Ethnology

This book is the course text for the Open University ethnography module, D844, and it's one of the few textbooks which I've found truly enjoyable to read. It's a great introduction to ethnography (which I've never studied before), and is very thorough, deep and detailed, without at any point becoming too dry. Hammersley and Atkinson really explain the concepts tackled, and never fall into the trap of merely scratching the surface and then moving on (a textbook trait which I find infuriating!).

There are many illustrative examples taken from a diverse range of previous ethnographic studies, so that theory and practice are linked. This book is clear, the authors' enthusiasm comes across by the bucketful, and most importantly this gives an excellent grounding in the nature, practicalities ... Read More:
