I used this book for a four day visit to Rome. It is excellent. It does not have photos, the plans are small and it is quite dense. However, its virtues far outweigh any deficiencies. It fits snugly into one's pocket and has a wealth of interesting and useful information. One can turn any street corner in Rome and see something one wants to know about; and nine times out of ten, this guide book has it there with all the relevant facts and anecdotes.

This is essentially a compendium of three earlier Freely books: Strolling through Istanbul, Around the sea of Marmara and The Bosphorus, all published by Istanbul's Redhouse press. Freely is an excellent and throrough writer and it would be harder to find a better cultural guide. The marketplace is slightly crowded by the fact that by the previous three volumes and his "Blue Guide" (which is also excellent) are still available. This volume is updated and slightly abbreviated from the other three books and fine for most people's needs, although the Blue Guide has slightly better plans. If you are planning to stay longer or are a real completist you might want to spend three times as much on three Redhouse volumes. >>More Details |
