I daresay that there are quite a few people out there who have a layman's interest in the events of the Second World War but may be daunted by this book's 430-odd page length (nearly 500 including appendices and notes).
If this block of paper had been dumped in front of me as part of the necessary reading for a history exam I might've preferred to take up smoking instead.
But I'd have had little to fear. It's not dull or boring. It's not written in a slow or difficult manner. It's a thoroughly informative and exciting read that you'll constantly wish to get back to.
A good deal of the information in this book comes from personal letters and diaries written by those deeply involved in the colossal war-within ... Read More:

This is an excellent history book, the sort I wish I'd had 30 years ago. Not just dates and battles and important people, but information on how the ordinary people lived, what they wore, what work they did, how events affected them, the builings...... Lots of very innformative pictures. And lots of 'asides' on historical figures whom I'd heard of, but didn't know exactly why they were important, with just enough information on each for me to gauge whether to do further research. I've given copies of this book to three youngsters in the target age group and their parents have all reported back that their offspring loved the book.

I am a teacher who has long been looking for a simplified version of the Egyptian myths. This book fits the bill exactly! I loved the questions and extra info at the end of each story and the answers at the back!! This is a great book for me to use with the children or for Key Stage 2 children to read by themselves. Little touches, such as the hieroglyphic name plate and the animated scribe, make it very child-friendly. Truly excellent value for money!!

This book is FANTASTIC. On behalf of my daughter, I would like to say this is a very moving story and is a real page turner. The symapathy goes out to this girl because it is a true story and it sets the scene. The ordeals this girl (Adaline Yen Mah) goes through is truely awful and you feel for her. My daughter has cried and commented on this book to me and it has intrested me. My daughter is in year 8 and does not like reading at all but this book was set for her and her class to read for school and she has read it and is so sad when she hears about this poor young girl and what she goes through. It talks about her as a young girl and moves to adult hood and Adaline Yen Mah is truely a chinese cinderella. Very moving and HIGHLY recommened.

This is an amazing book. By the end, you real feel like you know Anne. She's an incredible girl, and tells of her amazing journey through teenage life in hiding. This book is filled with powerful emotions, there are sad bits, frightening bits and happy bits. I just couldn't put it down. As you read about Anne's life, you began to feel you know her, and when you find out what happens to her at the end, it real feels like loosing a member of your family. I was in tears. She's such a brave girl, and didn't deserve such an awful life. Read it, it really is an amazing story.

This audio CD book, alongside with other Naxos educational CDs for children, is absolutely fantastic. It contains loads of information, so adults interest is guaranteed as well as children's fascination. It's a must for curious little minds. Presented in an easy listening format, it educates and enterntains at the same time. Boring car journeys became a highly enjoyable and educational experiences in our family since Naxos CDs were purchased. Being non-fiction, they can be listened to over and over again, offering a chance for the child to remember and/or understand more details each time.

My 6-year-old son is Autistic, and discovered this book at our city museum. He fell in love with it and I got it from our library. It's obviously been well loved (falling apart)so I've put it on the wish list to buy.
He has learned so much about British history without even trying and, as he has a fantastic eye for detail, he's always the one to spot the objects that are on display in the present-day museum, as they appear in previous ages.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for any learner, but especially visual learners, who get put off by dense writing.
