This story is set in Kansas in 1978. Lesley O'Malley, the young protagonist is at the story's opening in 12th grade. She does not seem a believable teen, but much more like someone upward of age 25!

Lesley has plenty of issues on her plate to accelerate her growth. Her mother, Mara, a Hungarian WWII Holocaust survivor slips into a hazy state between delusions and reality; her 9-year-old sister Megan whom I found spoiled, loathsome and obnoxious is an added cross to bear. I found Megan thoroughly unpleasant and just could not like her. A pie in the face for Megan! The girls' father, O'Malley is a gentle man who tries to keep the peace at all costs.

Mara, always unstable relives the atrocities she endured during the ... Read More:

the third book by Cathy Glass is as moving as the last two volumes. Cathy writes well without being over the top as so many of the "misery memoirs" can be. Cathy paints a picture of her very ordinary family (and I mean that as a compliment, not an insult) trying their best to give Dawn the best life they can. It is to be hoped that the social services do a better job now than they did 25 years ago. Without wishing to spoil the story for others their deliberate withholding of the facts about Dawn's upbringing could have been extremely damaging to the Glass family. The only thing that didn't ring true in fact was Cathys ( and also her husbands) reaction to those revelations........... I would have made an official complaint at least but I suppose ... Read More:

I rarely read books but thought I would give this a go. I couldn't put the book down after reading every chapter hoping this would be the one where joe was free of these monsters. To call them monsters is a compliment actually but cannot think of a word that best describes them. I am lost for words. It is beyond me how people can be so cruel as to harm a helpless child. As a mother myself, it breaks my heart to think this happens to innocent children out there. Would highly recommend this book.
Great book Joe! Hope you and your family are all keeping well!:)

This book is amazing, heart wrenching and brutal. I could not put it down. It seems so honest and gives a real insight into what people go t hrough with alcohol and drug issues. It also shows how love can touch us and what a determined human being can achieve...

This book is beautifully written and I was desperate to read Toni's sequel as I needed to find out if she ever did manage to get answers from her mother or a resolution over her father's actions.

The book is damning indigtment of the Northern Irish Protestant family that ostracised her for "shaming" her father by reporting the abuse when he had made her pregnant.

A step above many of the Memoirs of misery that currently flood the market.

I hope this book enables others to face the fear and speak out for themselves, or helps others to not keep secrets when they KNOW other family members or friends are being abused.

I applaud Toni Maguire, she is an inspiration.

I bought this book from Amazon last week at a bargain price. Last night, no one heard a peep from me, as I sat transfixed, unable to put this book down! I stayed up until 3.30am, as I just had to finish this book in one sitting. It's definitely a page-turner!
Anya's harrowing true story had me experiencing all kinds of emotions - hatred for her abusive uncle, fear with Anya, as she tried everything she could to avoid the confrontations and the inevitable heartbreak. I also felt her joy to finally get her life back on the road to recovery and the fact that she is a survivor. I have to admire her bravery and determination to survive at all costs.
The only thing I found which frustrated me slightly was occasionally she repeated herself ... Read More:

Cathy Glass writes in much the same gripping style as Torey Hayden, allowing you to learn about the child (in this case Tayo), as she does throughout the story. With her fluent story-telling style, it is easy to be swept up in the tale, and read the whole book in one day, hardly pausing for breathe between chapters.

Moreover, this book is not simply a tale of horror and suffering, although, to be sure, there is mention, but rather a moving memoir of her time with Tayo, highs and lows, progress and setbacks.

A well-written and moving read by all accounts.

This is a strikingly intelligent book, not a christmas card. What the previous reviewer terms blunt I would call honest, and who would want a dishonest book on this or any other subject? The subject is huge - ten lives to be described - and that calls for detached, compassionate journalism, which is what it gets from the author. Without the structure that the journalist puts on the subject the warmth, generosity, dammit the sheer guts of Alex Bell, wouldn't leap off the page the way they do - and we'd be lost in the pitfalls of the law and adoption, the mire and mess of the British social services. It's a serious subject taken seriously. It's well-researched and beautifully illustrated. And if it's 'blunt' .... well I have bad news for you, Bambi's mother doesn't ... Read More:
