Nigella does it again. She writes great recipes with such relish and personality to her writing.
I just love her mince pie recipes, the pastry is just superb!!! Also try the Rocky Road recipe, I have tried this from her Nigella Express book but the Xmas recipe for this is even richer!! An interesting book with humour and a few helpful hints but I have been cooking for a family for 30 years - probably of more use to the younger reader with limited kitchen skills - I will give this to my daughter in the hope that I might come home to a cooked meal that doesnt cost £5 a head and leave every pan and surface in the kitchen covered in goo! I am an optimist at heart.
Disappointingly several pages fell out as I read it so make sure you have sellotape to hand. >>More Details |

Plain boring and obviously written to bail out Mr. Gladwell. Mr. Gladwells first book might be a black swan. Some examples: "the beatles had to play 8 hours a day in a Hamburg strip club in order to "learn genius" and Bill Gates "learned how to program" by cheating Washinton University on hours spent on a shared computer and more wild mixed stories with a lack of meaning. We know the Beatles were good musicians and Bill Gates has a good idea how to program. So what Mr. Gladwell? On the plus side - its an easy read comparable in style to the "metro-newspaper" but... metro is free......

This book is exactly the sort of thing you'd expect from Gok: wonderful if slightly quirky outfits, and lots of positive "girlfriend" style comments and introductions.
I love it! Complements spill from the pages, along with great outfit ideas, explanations, fashionable twists and some makeup advice... the pictures are really helpful and well done, and give loads of good outfit ideas for all occasions! A really good feature is the list of which shops the clothes came from, although I don't think that you can find them in stock any more. This suffers from the same problems as the DVD.
It's derivative. There is absolutely nothing that hasn't been said over and over again. It's simplistic. Life can be simple, but that doesn't mean you should treat your audience as if they are too. It's repetitive. Get a variety of different figures in your niche to all say the same things using slightly different words. It's nasty. Follow the philosophy through to it's logical conclusion and you are left with the concept that those who suffer have brought it upon themselves. As a statistician, the book and its premise struck me as an interesting read, but it is clear after a few chapters that the book itself is meandering nowhere. What is worse is that the evidence is always second hand philosophy and the book is peppered with uninteresting self promotion. If your idea of a good read is to re-read Bertrand Russell or to move towards a footnote where the author feels it important to tell you he doesnt wear a tie in meetings then, please, feel free to lap this up and all the sixth form anarchy that it attempts to promote. As for the statistics, it is amateur stuff. The Black Swan itself is an improbable event on which the author places far too much emphasis. It soon becomes confused and contradictory. We simply refer to this book as 'The Food Bible'. I have used it constantly since starting to wean my daughter. She is now over one and I'm still getting my money's worth out of it. Some of the recipes have become family favourites! Simple, practical recipes which are tasty, what more could you ask. I found I picked about 5 or 6 from each age range and kept cooking batches, adapting to suit what i had in the cupboard, and to my daughters changing tastes. Good practical advice and a great starting point for weaning and cooking for a family.

What gives this book a very distinguished credibility and authenticity is the pertinent fact that the author formulated his ideas while as a Holocaust prisoner. Immediately the reader is taken out of the comfort zone as the captive and dehumanising realities of such a barbaric context are presented.
Frankl looks very very deeply at what provides human strength to get over the most forlorn, hopeless and torturing circumstances. Nietzche's dictum "What doesn't kill us only make us stronger?" planted itself in my mind throughout this book and just did not move. Having read such glowing reviews of this book i began to read it with high expectations - it may well be a good descriptive text, but it has no impact at all on all of the billions of people on the planet who can't just conveniently run away to an island or go off for a year to find themselves - it was a self-satisfying, shallow read - i am sorry I wasted hard-earned money on it.

'Blink' is, as many others have said, an anecdotal, absorbing book on the premise of just how powerful gut instincts can be. It's not an in-depth analysis or criticism of theory, but as I picked it up that wasn't what I was looking for anyway. As a Psychology student, I read it outside of my course for enjoyment and not only does it give grounding to such an interest (i.e. a friend in her 3rd year of Psychology is using 'thin-slicing' in her project, and I lent her this book to help her understand it fully!) but is also one of those books that stays with you. It affects how you think about certain decisions and a greater understanding of your own mind. What more could you want from it?
