Coming to Cromford? Then read Alison Uttleys' wonderful descriptions in Our Village and find that much remains unchanged from her childhood at the beginning of this century. Walk around the market place and see the chemist shop with its vessels of coloured liquid just as they were, stop at the little cafe ,once a barbers shop, where she waited in the trap while her father had his hair cut, and walk over the bridge to view the splendours of Willersley Castle. Much of the writing in this book is not available in any other publication, as the individual books of essays are now out of print. Beautifully illustrated by the talented Charles Tunnicliffe. Once you've read this, try The Country Child , a book to be enjoyed as much by adults as children.

This is absolutely the best Christmas story ever. By far the best I have read my nearly four year old. Superb all the way through, beats all those saccharine boring old christmas stories. My son loves this. We discovered it in a library in Capetown. Then moved to NZ and loaned it from the library here. Now have bought our very own copy and will be buying it as presents. Brillant.

Both my children as well as all my nephews and nieces have loved this book. Simple storey, owl is trying to sleep but the other birds and animals in the tree keep making noise and keep him awake. No child can resist the chance to repeat the noises and will love the chance to identify the characters in the tree. Great repeat value as this book can be read again and again to the child without boring him. Suitable once the child is starting to mimic sounds (say 18 months) until about 3 years old

Another wonderful tale from the 'OLD BEAR' series, based on her own toy collection.
This review refers to the Hutchinson Hardback edition/2003.
32 high quality shiny pages, in the popular 2-page spread format - wonderfully illustrated throughout.
The 'Old Bear' series of books are all based on the harmless and captivating 'toys-coming-to-life' theme.
This story is all about the arrival of a new character.
The toys have all gone to the sea-side for the day, but, as usual, it becomes an exciting adventure.
In this delightful story, it is the turn of `Little Bear' who gets a little out of his depth when he tries to retrieve his beach ball! His adventure takes him and his new friend to a secret ... Read More:

The nursery's stuffed toys decide they need to rescue "Old Bear" from the attic where he had been put for safekeeping but now has been forgotten. The story is about how the toys set about getting him out from up there. Each animal comes up with an idea but in the end only one works out.
There are some books that I feel one cannot dislike and this is one of them. I've been reading it to my five year old for four years now and he still gets moved by it. A lovely, sweet book

I love love LOVED this book when I was a child. The weasel terrified me!!! I was only about 4 as the previous reviewer was and the downtrodden little grey rabbit's bravery stood out. I never really understood why she did what she did when they treated her so badly.... Anyway, this is a brilliant book and I hope it hasn't been altered at all since my childhood because I loved the "peril" element of the story and everything else about it. Highly recommended for kids (and kids at heart) but probably the younger ones.
