...by that I mean finally Kenneth Williams, one of the real British cinematic and broadcasting legends of the last century, gets the book he has long deserved.
I know his diaries backwards and have watched/listened to the many tributes on TV/radio since his death in 1988. However this book, with its unprecedented access to the key people in Kenneth's life, introduces so many new facts, photos, anecdotes and revelations. It's a real joy for the Williams/Carry On fan, beautifully written and wonderfully researched. I initially approached with caution fearing a re-hash - it's actually the opposite. Having just read Marco Pierre White's superb autobiography (Devil in the Kitchen)I thought it would be interesting to read GR's as a cross reference. The piece on the back was misleading. It inferred that this was a book that had soul/intimacy and insight. How far from the truth that is! GR seems to sneer at others whilst boasting at length and bigging himself up. He tries to come across as an everyman, for eg, he talks about leaving Aubergine and going for an interview taking his 'one suit from my sparse warddrobe' then goes on to say that at the time he was earning £75000... As a nurse on less than half than that it was irritating.

Having played in a team which never reached the heights described in this book, and being the worse player in that team, I can fully relate to the bitter sweet joys of cricket. For all you pub players and the like, read it while rain stops play.

Putting aside the storyline of `Touching the Void' my reason for submitting this review is to pay homage to a masterpiece of writing. If I had to select a single volume as the very best from my collection of over 1,000 climbing and mountaineering books it would be Joe Simpson's `Touching the Void'. It is unrivalled; so with almost 100 mainly 5-star reviews already placed for this Amazon offering there appears little need to add another. However I concentrate on manner of writing. I have just submitted a review of Mick Fowler's second autobiographical book `On Thin Ice' in which, though I saluted his imaginative and courageous approach to extreme and exacting expeditions around the world, I was critical of his writing style. A great book with some rare photos and excerpts from Kurt's diary. The best thing is the way some information is loose and can be taken out of the book and looked at more closely e.g the lyrics to smells like teen spirit. A must for fans or those curious about Kurt

I got this book a few weeks ago, and normally it takes me forever to finish a book - as I get bored very easily, but I read this whole book in a couple days! Its a brilliant book, and really interesting, learning exactly what celebs go through. You may not be a fan of Jordan, but after readling this youll find another side to her. Its great.....

Ms Calman hits the jackpot once more with How 'not' to murder your mother! Having nodded in agreement all the way through Confessions of a Bad Mother and Failed Grown up I wasn't sure if, given my own wonderful relationship with my mother, How 'not' to Murder Your Mother would ring true. My goodness me! I laughed, I cried and I did nod along! A very honest and heartfelt book that anyone who has ever had a mother should read!
