Well laid out. easy to read. lots of nice diagrams. ok so it won't get you honours points but should contain enough to pass and is far less intimidating than those huge physiology texts. great for preclinical medics. not enough detail for pure physiology students though.

I am still amazed with how well written and pleasurable to read this book is. Botany can be quite complicated at times, and I will not say that this book hasn't had at least one or two topics that didn't interest me at first (such as genetics), but once you start reading it you really feel hungry to read more.
It is written in a way that almost feels like reading a novel. I am going to read it again as I found that writing notes were distracting me away from the pleasure of reading the book itself. It also makes me wonder why when I was at schoool they didn't teach us all those interesting things the book so easily and magnificently tours us about. Wow, I have learnt so much!
Concise and practical, it still manages to expand on certain subjects within the AQA Biology text book. It also clarifies areas of the text book that, in my view, come across as poorly written. The questions are also well structured, with direct answers, although I did not notice a mistake in the answer for Module 2 question 5(a). The diagram clearly shows Prophase, but the answer says it's Anaphase. Other than that though, this book is an essential buy for anyone studing AS Biology.

First the good points. Jared Diamond writes excellently and makes some very good arguments, his humanity and morality is evident throughout the book. The later part of the book, which highlights many of the modern worlds more repugnant acts (especially on genocide) is a masterpiece in the critique of human barbarity and it's attempted justifications. Though there is no criticism of Israel's 'ethnic cleansing', which is a bit of a disappointment. Now for the criticism. Jared Diamond seems to have at best a rudimentary understanding of evolution and natural selection, and some of his statements don't stand up to even the most cursory reflection. For example he states 'The winner takes the losers land, sometimes also the losers women, and thus the loser's opportunity ... Read More:

I won't write a detailed review of the content of this tremendous book, as other reviewers have covered it well.
Prothero sets out to bring together the vast amounts of evidence for the theory of evolution from the world of palaeontology accumulated over the last 20 or so years and add it to the already immense bank of supporting fact.
The shame referred to in my title is the Prothero feels forced into writing this book to counteract the wave of pseudo-scientific nonsense flooding the U.S. from the world of Creation Science (an oxymoron painfully lacking in irony), and it's modern brethren Intelligent Design.
While not aimed at any individual publications, Duane Gish is a frequent offender who is torn to pieces by Prothero's knowledgeable ... Read More:

This book is well-written, informative and useful. However, I think it would have been greatly improved if the lists of natives plants had been accompanied by photos, which would make the selection of plants much easier for less experienced gardeners.

At first I thought this book was just going to be one of those annoying tomes written by someone who has got all smug because they have escaped the rat race, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The author works for the famous BBC natural history unit and has travelled the world filming and making natr=ure documentaries, but I get the imprssion that he is never happier than when he is at or near home, finding new revelations amongst the commonplace at home.
It has certainly sharpened my appetite, not just to see birds but to basically keep my eyes and ears open when out and about because there is certainly a bustle in the hedgerow, in case you don't know.

This book is fantastic, other reviewers haven't understood the intentions of this book. It isn't intended for the general dog owner, i am doing a behaviourist course, and need to know not only the effects of a behaviour, but how and why that behaviour occurs, and be able to refer to how the dogs brain (and mind) works in relation to this behaviour. If you just want a book that will tell you how to re-train a problem dog this isn't the book for you. BUT if you are TRULY interested in canine behaviour, and why they behave as they do, and are willing to discover the indepth truth (which does touch on the original scientists who discovered most of what we now know about dogs- of course using what we now class as neanderthall techniques). This book is for a committed learner, it is not a coffee table ... Read More:

Thanks Girls for this amazing book. There is harldy any literature about women who are past fifty and still look incredible without being botoxed out of their brains - women who can be role models for us all - and this book is a shining example of beautiful ageing. I loved the gorgeous photos and the product info. Beauty Bible is great too, of course, but this is particularly relevant to that moment when panic strikes as you look in the mirror. Also good that the products are organic. Generally a good, informative, uplifting read.

"Brock" (as it's known!) is without doubt not just the best Microbiology textbook available but one of the best textbooks period. The book is logically set out, beginning with basic introductory material covering areas such as how we define a microorganism, cell structure, evolution, diversity and biochemistry before moving on to more complex general topics, including microbial growth, bioenergetics, catabolism and molecular biology. Brevia on Virology and Mycology are given, before moving on to the main sections on Bacteria and Archaea, arranged in terms of the taxonomy used in Bergey's Manual (the Microbiology Bible), going through the Proteobacteria by Class before covering Gram positive Bacteria and all the other various groups. Archaea are covered in more depth than you'd find in any other general ... Read More:
