I wish I had this book when I was a boy it brings back so many memories of things I tried to do (and nearly aways failed). Catapult making,go-cart making,first aid and girls all things that I sadly lacked the necessary skills in, not for the lack of trying I hasten to add.This book would have tipped the odds in my favour, I think.From codes to coin tricks I would have ascended to the rank of supercool with the knowledge in this book.
So parents out there I implore you to buy this book for your children and give them a fair chance in this unfair world and if not for that reason you could always read it yourselves !!! >>More Details |

Not quite the gripping read that the reviews had me believing it would be. I was expecting some tantalising narrative, imaginative characterisation and a poignant denouement - instead I got a load of electrical charts. Is this postmodernism gone mad?

Philippa Gregory is one of only a handful of writers I will buy in hardback as I just can't wait for the paperback to come out but I was in for a disappointment with The Other Queen. I found it very slow and it didn't engage me at all. Dotting between the various characters was repetitive and unlike other Philippa Gregory novels where I haven't been able to put them down, I read this one over a period of several weeks on and off, for me it just didn't seem to get going. She is a brilliant writer but I was sadly disappointed with this book and only wish she would go back to writing stunning novels like The Queen's Fool and Virgin Earth.

Not a lot going for this book. The author spends a lot of time explaining what broken and lost people some of his former comrades in arms are (most of this is described in other books by the people involved), and that war wrecks peoples lives so perhaps they need professional help. Not exactly news to anyone, one might think.

This is a great book, with some lovely ideas. I particularly enjoyed making the desserts. Kids food is good, as is the bbq section. The only problem i found was that there was rather a lot of seafood,which i dont like. but that's a personal issue, not a fault of the book!! i do like good hearty meals though, so maybe healthy options wasnt the book for me, assome of the recipes obviously arent as hearty as i would have liked.
Good book though, am pleased that Gordon's creating recipes that are healthier, as usual his recipes have lots of ingredients and are very rich and unhealthy!! >>More Details |

This book is for those of you who like history as a sweep of events and with interlocking sections that you have to piece together to get your overall picture. Although this makes reference to the current election I think its only because I think the author sees the two candidates as potentially the Hamilton and Jefferson characters of this age - one quite happy to use American military strength and the other very sey against it. And its this split in the US approach that the four sections of the book address. The four sections cover war, religion , what is an american, and the belief you can have it all if you just try hard enough and while I don;t think you get a full final view I think the observation at the end that the role of government is about making people happy ... I am a great fan of Maureen Lipman. It is ages since I read 1 or 2 books of her earlier books, which i thought were brilliant. I have just finished "past it notes" and would recommend it as a great night time read. I love the style and wit of the chapters, with some ab hilarious laugh out loud parts. The book took me on a whirlwind tour of her personal and professional life. I found out how much she thought of jack her husband too. It is a uniquely written and worded book. Am so glad I have the time to read again. I have recently read "pop goes the weasel" which was funny and interesting. Also, a brilliant book called "now then lad" about a rural bobby in yorkshire which is worth getting hold of.

Absolutely the best book in the series of Roy Grace. He just goes from strength to strength in his "dead" books. That last sentence though grrr, hands up who feels like strangling him! Possibly the best, "straight to the jugular" ending of any book I have read.I have no doubt the next in series will beat all previous sales figures by miles.Personally I loved the way he flitted from N.Y to the UK, was very cleverly done. Great stuff.

I only started reading this because I bought it for my husband for Xmas but once I started I couldn't put it down. I used to read music books when I was younger but stopped when I realised they were nearly always fan books. This isn't like that. It's obvious Mick Wall knows his stuff and has spoken to everyone including the band but he doesn't pull any punches. I don't know if the band will like it but they should because it's not only a great book about them but just a great book anyway. Utterly brilliant.
