My main problem was with the narrative voice, which I found unconvincing and uninteresting - if an author's going to write in the 1st person, there should be a damn good reason for doing so. In Notes on a Scandal, the narrator is the most interesting part of the whole book, and Zoe Heller captures the bitter, lonely old busy-body perfectly. Whereas Grace in the House at Riverton is simply a dull person with no personality. The chapters which were set when she is an old lady were quite boring and painful to read - like those hideous scenes in Titanic. Personally, I think it would have been easier to get into the book if it had been told in the 3rd person. The characters of the family - so much more interesting than Grace - would have been much ... This book is amazing! I find myself using it on a daily basis to look things up as well as using the recipes. It's great for people like me who do not have a clue about cooking as it is very easy to follow. Even if you are a good cook already, you will find this book invaluable for giving you ideas on what to give your little one. I think my daughter would be living on jars of baby food if I hadn't bought this book!

This is a fantastic book again by Robert Harris, like all his previous fiction I found it insightful. I believe it has been cleverly written to lead the readers into constantly seeing Adam Lang has Tony Blair but that is part of the beauty of the writing, because for me its brings readers into the complexities of being a ghost writer and the emotions that was involved. He became an unwilling confidant and was left with the burden of the truth and the dangers that went with the knowledge. A beautifully crafted and intriguing story.

I'm nearly at the end of the book but couldn't wait to say what a thoroughly enjoyable, funny, and thought provoking read this book has been. I've read this as an atheist with an always enquiring mind. I've not felt pressured into following Ms Gilbert's beliefs - this is not a "Try this at home" or a "How to be successful" book, nor is it judgmental of any religions. This is Gilbert's very personal journey and it explains ideas and practices from most religions. I have an understanding of where she's coming from. It hasn't changed my views of the practised religions, but it has encouraged me to read further. It could also be titled "A tourist's guide to searching for God" as the descriptions of the places Gilbert visits could rank with any good book on ... This latest 44 Scotland Street novel doesn't disappoint except that it is just too difficult to make it last! Once finished, I, as usual, feel bereft - how many months will I have to wait for another in this series or, the equally enjoyable, Sunday Philosophy Club series? If only A McCall-Smith would concentrate on just these two series about wonderful Edinburgh! His subtle social comment and wonderful description of his characters draw the reader into this fascinating city and says a lot about life in the UK (sorry, Scotland) in 2008. Read ALL the books in the series in the order they were written and you will be hooked! MORE! MORE! MORE! soon, please.

Having read the other reviews about how gripping this book was, it was disappointing to find it relied on crude language, a poorly executed plot and generally graphic sex scenes that were irrelevant and at best, unimaginative. All the characters had potential to develop but were let down by shortcuts and poor conclusions. Could have been much better written with a different ending and more care to make the characters less one dimensional.

Like almost everyone, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a great admirer of the actress Frances McDormand and I think she may excel as Miss Pettigrew if the screen adaptation lives up to the speed and panache of the original story. Yes, ... the original story ... It is definitely of the Cindrella variety and none the worse for that. Some have seen the influence of others in its origins - but none has yet pointed out the faint echoes of a memorable short story by W.S. Maugham about the unexpected London triumph, both social and sartorial, of a mature widow called "Jane". Now I don't exactly remember the date of Somerset Maugham's story (it may have been written before Miss Watson's or afterwards) and so one may have influenced the other to a degree. As to the ...
