this book admittedly is not laid out in an obviously systematic way but i m not sure that matters. it got me interested in some things that i thought were rather boring, and on the whole though i haven t read it all through yet it does seem to the makings of a very good read, though inevitably some of the puzzles will be very familiar.

the version that i have has an incorrect printing of the 3x3 "nearly magic" square on p66, the first of the two examples. the fix is fairly easy though and provides a nice additional problem for anyone interested!

Still worth buying if you're a fan of the Inkworld Trilogy. The story kept me hooked throughout and Cornelia Funke has no qualms about springing the unexpected at any point. It does go on a bit with itself in places, but you can still fully appreciate the book regardless.

What gives this book a very distinguished credibility and authenticity is the pertinent fact that the author formulated his ideas while as a Holocaust prisoner. Immediately the reader is taken out of the comfort zone as the captive and dehumanising realities of such a barbaric context are presented.

Frankl looks very very deeply at what provides human strength to get over the most forlorn, hopeless and torturing circumstances. Nietzche's dictum "What doesn't kill us only make us stronger?" planted itself in my mind throughout this book and just did not move.

It's very difficult to find any sort of fault with any story where humanity can triumph inhumanity, it really is. There's just such a sense of sadness and misery ... Read More:

Sorry I found this book to be very depressing, long winded and the narrator really annoyed me - I do not think I am going to be able to finish it ........

Books : The Gruffalo's Child

My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".

In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense.

All-in-all, a disappointing follow-up to the excellent original.

This book Waltz's you through Len Goodman's life and you get to know the man behind the judge. Even if you are not a fan of Strictly Come Dancing you will still like the book because it also gives the reader an insight into growing up in the East End and Len Goodman comes across as a very witty likeable and affable gentleman. I found myself laughing out loud on many occasion much to the amusement of my fellow train passengers! I don't know if I will ever be able to eat beetroot again....you will have to read the book to find out why!!

Let's leave the recent Radio 2 controversy to one side and concentrate on this book. I imagine if you've got this far, you are either a fan of Russell Brand or football, probably both.
`Articles of Faith' is a collection of Russell Brand's Saturday column in The Guardian spanning the 2007/08 season. If like me you didn't manage to buy the paper every week it is the perfect opportunity to play catch up. It's also very funny. I respect Russell for writing the column. With a burgeoning media profile and a movie carer about to take off, I was both glad and surprised that he stuck to the task and continued writing about football from wherever he found himself around the globe (Hawaii, Hollywood, The Isle of White). Surely, with so much going on, it would be easy ... Read More:
