Charlotte Zeepvat has brought together a lovely set of royal photographs. Anyone with an interest in European royalty should think about buying this book. The numerous family groups show well the relationships between the many European royal houses pre 1918 and the post 1918 ones are interesting glimpses ofwhat happened to them, especially the German ones who lost their thrones and so are not as easy to find pictures of. There are also lovely shots of individuals. I especially liked the children, showing nursery life through the Victorian and Edwardian years. Particularly poignant were those of children, full of promise but destined never to grow up such as Princes Sigismund and Waldemar of Prussia and Prince Friedrich Wilhelm and Princess Marie of Hesse. ... I suppose most of us have deeply engrained the picture of the "evil" Prince John trying to oust "the good and hero-like King Richard the Lionheart" as portrait in Robin Hood movies and books. How can one compete with such a personality? Just compare "The Lionherat" to "Lackland". Rightly Mr. Warren starts to explain how this reputation came about.
Somehow one longs for a bit for balanced approach. Indeed , is book provides excatly this, but without falling into the trap of completly whitewashing King Johan. Warren is not at all blind to his faults and spells them out. But he does not see just the negative sides of this King. A brilliant Romanov photo album at a reasonable price? Yes, it is possible!
As most Romanov lovers will know, the best photograph books are virtually impossible to get hold of unless you're willing to part with serious cash. Charlotte Zeepvat's book, however, is a real gem and it's a steal. I got this for Christmas, but unlike some other gifts, I am sure I will continue to be delighted with this one for many years. It is beautifully done, with many, many pictures, most of which I had never seen before. It is not all about Nicholas, Alexandra and their children, but more concerned with the Romanov family as a whole, spanning from the family of Alexander II to the various emigres who scattered across Europe and America after the Revolution. ...
