Not as good as Silverfin or By Royal command, but nevertheless a great young adult fiction novel. Charlie Higson was getting as good as Anthony Horowitz but it does not have the action, shame he has a great name to use. Why Flemming Productions did not use Anthony Horowitz is just crazy.

I've just finished reading this book with my 8-yr-old and can't recommend it highly enough. As one would expect of a Michael Morpurgo book, it is wonderfully written, but the story is very real and deeply moving. As dog owners, we often meet rescue greyhounds and they sometimes have backgrounds tinged with sadness or exploitation. Luckily there are people out there who do rescue or adopt them, just like Patrick and Joe in the story. No, don't buy this book if you want a factual book about greyhounds. Don't buy it if you want a fairytale ending. Buy it because it's a beautiful and affecting story that will make you smile, cry and maybe think about things a little differently. Both of us, child and parent, really looked forward to finding out ... Read More:

The final chapter of the current heroes of High School Musical is here. And if the message of the first film was "try new things," and the second was "don't let plans for the future spoil what you have now," this third outing was a combination of both. Some of the Wildcats see the future holding more of what they already do: Taylor wants to be the first black woman American President, Chad wants to be a Redhawk at the University of Alberquerque, Sharpay plans to conquer the world of show biz, and Gabriella has always dreamt of going to Stanford University for a degree in law. But Troy finds that Julliard is considering him for a drama scholarship, along with Sharpay, Ryan, and Kelsi, and a lot of other schools are offering him places. Since opening ... Read More:

As a loving and above all responsible parent I felt that this was the perfect reference manual to further my two daughters' education. Having recently caught my 8 year old watching television with most of her hand up one nostril only to be withdrawn and feed the extractions into her mouth below, I felt that the title of this book was relevant, and it seemed to place an emphasis on her health too, which can only be a good thing.

The fact of the matter is, there is a lot of genuinely useful information in here. It's all in question-and-answer format, there being 310 in all, and while a lot of them are rather pointless (at least to an adult) there are many that are handy to know and a whole lot that I couldn't answer myself. For example, I read ... Read More:

I read this over a few nights with my 7 year old daughter at bedtime. I have to say it touched me so much. Reading aloud, I could feel my voice starting to wobble when it came to Daisy talking about her feelings for her sister Lily who has learning difficulties. It was very well written and we both felt vexed for Daisy and contempt for the loathsome spoilt Chloe who gets her comeuppance. As someone who was sadly a victim of bullying at school I could really relate to Daisy's character and her worries and my daughter really empathised with her. I would definately buy more of this authors books.

Everyone knows the original stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood and The Wolf and The Three Little Pigs, written by Charles Perrault (Cinderella), Brothers Grimm (all the rest); but Roald Dahl has changed the stories and put in some gruesome humour - these rewrites are not suitable for grumpy old grown ups so be aware! My favourite story out of all of Dahl's altered fairy tales is definitely Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf & the three little pigs because they are linked together with Little Red Riding Hood who gives the wolf and the pigs' horrible endings! I would rate this book 9/ 10 because it could have had another one or two other famous tales included ... Read More:

I did dither over whether or not to read Inkspell as I found Inkheart a little slow in places but decided to go for it as I can't leave a trilogy hanging......

I'm glad I did, because it's worth the read. As interesting a concept as Inkheart was (reading characters 'out' of books), Inkspell held my attention and imagination better, perhaps because it's more interesting to see what goes on when you read yourself 'into' an imaginary world?

I don't know if it's intentional, but this book seemed to follow the same formula as the first, as far as 'pace' goes. The first third of the book had me turning pages to see what surprises the new world held....the middle third seemed to drop a gear and meander along until it reached the third and final ... This book makes fascinating reading and is written in a humorous and easy-to-read style. My only complaint is that the author tends to skip over the scientific discoveries of the 18th and 19th centuries rather quickly and then spends most of his time on the 20th century and mainly American contributions to science. But, after all, Mr. Bryson is typically American and tends to follow National Geographic style in this. Still, it is well worth reading even several times and is very thought provoking. Thank you, Mr. Bryson, for explaining it all so neatly.
