First book I have read of this author and a nice change from American style. Excellent story with twists and intrigue, will be reading many more.

The novel "Angels and Demons" deals with the murder of Leonardo Vetra. Robert Langdon, a professor of symbology, and Vttoria Vetra, the adopted dauther of the dead physicist, have to find the murderer. During solving the murder, they come across a deeply rooted conflict between the church and science.
The whole book, with its well thought-through plot, creates great tension and excitment in the reader.
The book is very recommendable for everybody who loves thrillers.

During the course of a year I am intending to return to classic novels. It would be unrealistic to try and rate these alongside new novels so I'm not even going to try - just simple reviews.
The power in Fitzgerald's writing is its starkness and sparsity. The Great Gatsby is a short novel by any standards but its power lies in the way the story creeps up on you. It's almost as if nothing seems to be happening but then you realise that in a very subtle way the action has carried you away.
Set in the Jazz area on Long Island it's a story of greed, love and lust, violence where things are rarely what they seem. Fitzgerald weaves intrigue into the plot. We are never really sure about who Gatsby is and what brings him to Long Island. ... Read More:

Never have I read a book that has gone deeper into the human psyche. It reveals stark, unvarnished truths; it observes without condemnation; it is unflinching, poignant and powerful in its delivery; it is inspirational in its style. If a better book has been written then I'm yet to discover it. A must read for all who seek knowledge and understanding about the most complicated creatures in existence: ourselves.

Dont be put off by the Title of this review. It only gets 4 out of 5 because the rest were so good. To me the letdown is that he seems to rush over the last parts of Caesars life to finish the series. There probably wasn't enough for a 5th book, but seems to have crammed it all into the 4th. Saying that it's still an excellent book and this is probably my favourite set of historical fiction books.

Considering the rave reviews this book has received, I was expecting it to completely grab my attention by the scruff of its neck and hurtle along at full force...but to be honest it's a bit of a false start!
I won't describe the plot (it's been done so many times before!) but i'll try to give another take on the whole thing...
The writing style is quite easy to read, and is well composed. But the plot itself takes a while to develop, as do the characters. It took a while for me to really get into the book and have an empathy for any of the characters.
I like a book that grabs me from the start, or if not then one that is at least sufficiently intriguing to make me want to read on. Unfortunately this did neither! That's not to ... Read More:

"The Writers' and Artist's Yearbook" (W&AY), published by A&C Black, has a long-standing reputation as a 'must-have' for any writer looking to get into publication. While a number of similar books now exist - including "The Writer's Handbook" (TWH), published by Macmillan, and "Writer's Market" (WM), published by David & Charles Ltd - W&AY remains the original font of knowledge, and for me, the premier choice.
All of these books contain roughly the same extensive listings of publishers, agents, print media, producers etc, and in truth there is little to choose between them. Indeed the competition is gradually catching up, and it is notable that TWH has undergone a major facelift for this year. Of course a lot will come down to personal preference regarding the ... Roald Dahl's voice is a delight. A refreshing change from the modern obsession for sound effects and other over-the-top techniques that, apparently, are added to capture a child's attention.
My two children listen to Dahl's audio CDs and read his books constantly. They enjoy many other styles of reading and story telling but I do believe Dahl has a special place in their hearts - and mine!
