Mohsin has written a clever book, which in my humble opinion should never have been published. It adds to the myth that there is something fundamentally wrong with western culture, in particular with that of the USA. While that of his country of birth Pakistan is painted as idlyllicaly humane and caring. This type of distortion is dangerous and feeds the bigots who want to undermine the self confidence of the West while being totally uncritical of the failings of the East. Would such a critical book written by a western have been published in Pakistan? Certainly not, I would suggest. I would discourage potential readers from buying this book.

Possibly not everyone's cup of tea, but personally, I thought it was a beautiful novel. A very sentimental read. Recommended - give it a chance!

The book is OK but it has its flaws. The 'twist' towards the end does not entirely make sense, and plausibility is lacking. Also the dialogue is somewhat stilted. Finally the police work in the book is not convincing. At times it seems contradictory and there are leaps in credibility. I must say, however, that Tom Rob Smith does write good prose. It reads very smoothly.

The first Mankell/Wallander book I've read. I enjoyed it, but would I want to read any more? Wallander is a caricature - drink problem, overweight, failed marriage - so it is only the gloomy Swedish setting that distinguishes it. Fun whilst it lasted, but I am not about to go out and buy the set.

I totally disagree with the first two reviewers. Yes the rape doesn't traumatize her as much as it would a normal person, but she is supposed to be a magical person descended from a love goddess who has unborn twins genetically derived from 6 of her lovers trying to stay alive long enough to rule the fey! - surely you cant quibble about reality at this point in the series...
If you like a fun fantasy with a sassy heroine, trying to deal with court intrigues, old feuds and the various lands of the sidhe all battling each other then this is a great series, and a good book. However you rea;;y do need to read them in order to keep track of who is who.

I read about 20 pages then skipped to 50 and then gave up. This type of sci-fi epic is not for me...or perhaps it is because I very much like Iain Banks but this one left me cold.
I think it was the relentless gadget name-dropping that did it eg x took the anti-grav hopper to the sun-port, not forgetting his zero-g hank'..shut up shut up..arrrghhh
the thought of 500+ pages of this made me put it swiftly aside.

This is classic Lee Child, when the Reacher formula was still working at its very best. The serial protagonist is at his peak in this novel, probably the best in the ever expanding list of Reacher stories. The story begins with Ex-military policemen Jack Reacher is lying low in Key West, digging up swimming pools by hand, and we get one of the best descriptions of what Reacher looks like and really thinks in this novel, unlike some of the others were we are left to imagine the big man. He is not best pleased when a private detective starts asking questions about him, but when the detective, Costello, turns up dead with his fingertips sliced off, Reacher realises it is time to move on. He ends up in lethal trouble involving a vicious Wall Street manipulator, a mysterious woman ... Read More:

Joanne Harris is perhaps better known for her novel, CHOCOLAT, than for this title, which is her debut. As explained in her author's note to THE EVIL SEED, it was largely due to pressure from her fans which saw to the book being reissued. Her brief discussion of the book is in itself quite interesting - to hear what an established author thinks about their first attempt at literature is nearly always to be fascinating, and this is no exception. With huge honesty, Harris herself acknowledges that the book was never a masterpiece as she had not found her own voice. But what it does do is suggest at the kind of writer she would later turn into.
THE EVIL SEED is a gothic novel about vampires, although this phrase is never used within the story itself. Alice, a young woman living ... Read More:

A very good plot, and well up to the usual standard of Rankin's powers of perceptive and descriptive writing, but let down, I think, by a somewhat lame ending. Admittedly, it's difficult to know how he could think of a finale which would appeal to all readers, but having just finished reading it about an hour ago, I can't help feeling a bit "flat".
