Philippa Gregory is one of only a handful of writers I will buy in hardback as I just can't wait for the paperback to come out but I was in for a disappointment with The Other Queen. I found it very slow and it didn't engage me at all. Dotting between the various characters was repetitive and unlike other Philippa Gregory novels where I haven't been able to put them down, I read this one over a period of several weeks on and off, for me it just didn't seem to get going. She is a brilliant writer but I was sadly disappointed with this book and only wish she would go back to writing stunning novels like The Queen's Fool and Virgin Earth.

Not a lot going for this book. The author spends a lot of time explaining what broken and lost people some of his former comrades in arms are (most of this is described in other books by the people involved), and that war wrecks peoples lives so perhaps they need professional help. Not exactly news to anyone, one might think.

Absolutely the best book in the series of Roy Grace. He just goes from strength to strength in his "dead" books. That last sentence though grrr, hands up who feels like strangling him! Possibly the best, "straight to the jugular" ending of any book I have read.I have no doubt the next in series will beat all previous sales figures by miles.Personally I loved the way he flitted from N.Y to the UK, was very cleverly done. Great stuff.

Alan is back on form with this wonderful novel. I found his last one (Love and Dr Devon) a bit naff (sorry Alan), but "Folly" was really lovely. Found it very hard to put down and I love happy endings. Can't wait for the next one!

I personally loved this book. It is not a particularly (if at all) 'intellectual' book - it is a romance and thriller novel that spans so many pages it manages to find itself wound up as a tome of a book.
Nevertheless, if you are going on a trip or find yourself needing something to read, give this a try. It is not as difficult as it may appear, and, quite fun! >>More Details |

It's not a bad book, it's just not that great, and it being Rankin, you do expect something far more than half-decent. And that's all this book is really, half-decent. Compared to most of the Rebus books, it's very thin on the ground plot-wise. Most of the characters are fairly forgettable; though the premise of the heist is not without interest. It's still the page turner we have come to expect from Rankin, but you get the feeling you know what is coming on the next page. To some extent this is true of any author you get used to reading - you get to know the style and way they tell a story. You knew with the Rebus novels that the loose ends would tie up at the end somehow, but not much of an idea how. In this book, the only suspense at the end is over who will be screwing who. ... Why cant Conn Iggulden write any faster? Have to say, another triumph. I love the way he writes, you feel like you are part of the whole journey. It's clever as well, because the heroes aren't heroes, there just as nasty as the bad guys, however they are your bad guys! Going to be depressed again now waiting ages for his next one :-(

I'd always enjoyed being read and later reading myself the Just So Stories. With children of my own I started them on these stories and having a cd of them means we can enjoy them on the move. The joy of hearing Jonnie Morris' super animal voice characterisations just adds to the enjoyment - takes me back to watching Animal Magic - deep joy!
Four year old daughter enjoys listening to the stories but my nine year old son has become a great fan - this now regularly is on his cd player in his room. Buy this and you'll all be able to listen together and enjoy. >>More Details |
