Well this one won't keep you awake at night. As a modest runner myself I found much of this book tedious, samey and uninspiring. A book like this is crying out for some dazzling insight into the process, the feeling, the elation of running but instead the reader just gets a not very interesting insight into the writer himself. I can't help but think that Murakami is just doing a walk-through here, scraping the barrel for a few old diary entries at the behest of his publisher. One run merges into another with only the degree of self-indulgence being the main distinguishing feature of each. More than anything I was surprised by the author's afterword in which he claimed to have honed and polished his work ad infinitum before finally releasing ... Read More:

I'm one of those minority reviewers who was less than gripped by this novel. I finished it but it seemed a bit of a chore at times (although other parts seemed to flow). I felt frustrated by the characters - the love stories between them never seemed convincing. I was hugely interested in the subject matter - I knew so little about the Biafra war and the book prompted me to find out more. However, the traumatic events surrounding our characters (and often happening to them) never seemed to be fully explored. The word Biafra is synonomous with starvation yet in the book I never got the sense of how bad things really were. Then in the last few pages, the war is over and they go home (minus Kainene). Having put so much emotional effort (throughout the ... Read More:

Typical Jackie Collins book. They all tend to merge in together (except the Santangelo books). If you like Jackie Collins then this lives up to the rest, but not very memorable.

It is a long time since I read my last Frost novel and I'd forgotten just how good these books are. With great characters and inter-twining plots, this book is the nearest I've come to un-put-downable in a long time and ranks alongside the very best crime fiction. This was a book that I was truly sad to finish.

This is a classic story for children, set in the 50's, it is about time, memory and friendship.
Tom, lonely and isolated as he is in quarantine, finds his way back in time, at night (when the hall clock strikes 13), to a wonderful old garden and a little girl called Hattie, who, to his curiosity, is dressed in old fashioned clothes. The two lonely children become friends and I don't want to give away the beautifully devoloped plot, but Tom slowly realises that Hattie is growing up, while he remains the same age.
The atmosphere of the story is both mysterious and engaging, as Tom slowly works out where he is and who Hattie really is.
The end of the story takes in the biblical idea of time coming to and end, or the modern notion of not ... Read More:

As always, really looking forward to the latest Tempe tome. Really wish I hadn't bothered. Characters didn't seem to care much about what was happening, and neither did I. Ryan turns up and......what happens? Well, nothing. Tempe attacked and hospitalised, does Katy turn up to see her? No. Unless you just want to collect a 'set' of Reichs novels, skip this one. Did I mention that it was also rather depressing/ Not in content, but in tone and style. Avoid.

I am really interested in the Mitford Sisters so I have been really looking forward to getting this book. It was much bigger than I expected but was very enjoyable. I admit that I got a bit bored with all the footnotes and about half-way through just started to ignore them unless I was really confused. Through the letters you get to see life from their many different perspectives, it really made me think of the relationship that I have with my own sister and the many times that we have seen the same situation in very different ways. I would recommend this book to people even if they are not a fan of the Mitfords- it gives a really good insight into that period of history.

If you need a reminder of why Kate Atkinson is one of the UK's best authors, particularly after her last couple of offerings, this novel ought to do it. 'When Will There Be Good News' is a stronger novel than its two 'Jackson Brodie' predecessors, coming up towards the standard of Atkinson's earlier standalone books.

A page turningly good read, the plot is tighter and cleaner than in 'One Good Turn' and, although there is still too much reliance on coincidence, it isn't as obvious. The character of Reggie, a spirited young nanny, is a breath of fresh air and she carries the story along, gluing together the various threads. Jackson Brodie and Louise Monroe, familiar from former novels, are also featured, but for me Reggie was definitely the star of the ... Read More:

by: Gregory David Roberts
March 24, 2005
Best Selling > Books > Fiction

Having successfully extricated himself and his huge ego from an Australian prison, heroin addict and armed robber Gregory David Roberts flees to Bombay. This powerful but flawed book documents the following 8 years during which GDR rises from the slums and embarks on an impressive portfolio of work experience including unofficial doctor, gangster, bollywood actor and jihadist. Along the way he amasses a wonderful array of friends and admirers, enriches many peoples lives, falls in love and gains deep and profound insights into the meaning of life. The first few chapters describing his arrival and early days in Bombay are superb; I was enthralled by GDR's vivid depiction of the sights, sounds and smells of his new city and the character Prabaker is a delight. However, as the ... Read More:

In her latest novel Toni Morrison takes us back to the late 17th century America. The plot gives her an opportunity to present America in the making, there is no US yet, there are colonies, each somewhat different in their culture, religion or attitude to slavery. Morrison adroitly shapes the plot in such a way as to give the reader at least an impression of the variety that once was America, sending her characters on distant voyages. The differences are the most clearly visible in the opposition between Maryland and New York yet the choice of character also helps Morrison to stress the diversity of American roots.
And yet "A Mercy" is not just a historical novel. The setting is important but Morrison seems much more interested in her characters. This concentration is reflected ... Read More:
