A very enjoyable popular science read. Evolutionary scientists are coming out with more and more evidence and theories on how evolution makes us what we are - not just the flesh and bones but why we think like we do. This book covers much of this interesting subject and does it well. He is a good writer that makes it easy to understand.
Some people will have an issue with this book -by it's nature, evolutionary biology and behaviourology are somewhat deterministic. It also necessarily recognises sexual differences. People of a left-wing bias tend to find this at odds with the fundamentals behind their politics (although the same fuss is not made when the same principles are applied to animals...) - hence low scoring reviews of this ... Subjects such as literature and the history of art have undergone a revolution since the 1970s or thereabouts as many theories and techniques from other disciplines are now routinely used as approaches to discuss text.
This book contains a discussion of all the usual ideas e.g. Marxist, Semiotics, psychoanalysis, gender and so on.
I agree that some of these approaches may give one additional insight into a book or picture. I am sometimes sceptical of the use made of these ideas by some critics though and feel that in the wrong hands they can lead to some bizarre and patently wrong interpretations. I think that they should only supplement and perhaps correct traditional approaches rather than replace them altogether.

I've only given this book four stars as although it is a really valuable and really useful book that is packed with practical techniques and knowledge, it is not, unfortunately, written in a very accessable style or for someone without a good grounding in NLP.
This is really a book for the experienced NLP practitioner which is a shame because the ideas in it deserve to be available to a much less restricted readership.
NLP for Dummies and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Dummies are both excellent books so here is my plea to Shelle Rose Charvet; please write a book called "Words that change minds for Dummies" - now that would be a book I would give five stars to.

The scale and velocity of world population increase over the last fifty years has been unprecedented in human history. Urbanisation, with over a billion people living in cities has become the key signature of this growth, with the urban population for the first time greater than in the country. These facts are startling, if common knowledge, however they are not much examined in the mainstream. Mike Davis's book looks at this global phenomenon in detail, and shows clearly how the city has been turned into slums, and how poverty has been urbanised.
Slum mega cities have strange geographies, and densities that defy analysis and seeming logic. Here Peri urbanism where city and country are virtually indivisible is covered as is the continual subdivision ... Read More:

Sadly, not as good a book as I was hoping for - it has all the breathless, unthinking enthusiasm of Wikinomics with none of the careful consideration in WeThink, marking it firmly as one of the 'overly exuberant' family of books on the topic - in short, it gives one very biased side of a very complex topic.
Some of the author's online writings are thoroughly fascinating and well considered, such as his thoughts on taxonomies versus folksonomies, but none of that intelligence is really shown in this book. It's not bad by any means - it's entertaining and well-written, but it's not as informative and insightful as I had expected from a book by Clay Shirky.

Like most of the books in this series these are good general base knowledge books. It covers the information in a simple to read format and simple enough language. Personally I thought this book was too surface level and too general and I used it very little, mainly just as a quick reference. If you really are starting from scratch and you need a book to spell out the basic principals to you then this is the book for you. If you like to think a little deeper and are aiming for a high mark you may need to look else where. The price, as texts go is however quite attractive and this is probably the reason why I bought it.

THis book is superb, while a few reviewers say it is too vaguye on some things and too specific on others (which is true - it has to be vague on some areas where the grower has to use their own judgement, there is no recipe or 12-astep programme you must respod to your plants!)
Very light on its hydropoincs stuff - but in my view this makes it a FANTASTIC book for a beginner, taking you through all the key areas and giving you a good, easy and forgiving method of growing (soil) rather than tryinjg to elarn about growing and hydro all at once. That said his hydro section is one of the clearest and best illustrated overviews I've seen - nbot a detailed how to but a great starter.
THe book doesn't quite attain truly biblical level - I'd highly recommend ... Read More:

Beware. Not everyone on a low carb diet will find these recipes particularly low carb. There are many that include onions and flour (both have a very high GI). But in it's favour there are no Americanisms in sight, and at least the dishes taste wonderful!
