I really like maps and have an extensive collection. I have bought this series of Madeira Tour & Trail Maps from the first edition.

The detail is excellent and as a GPS user I can vouch for the pin point accuracy of the details on the map. I would recommend taking this on any walk on the island. It enhances the whole experience as well as being an insurance against getting lost. I noticed lots of updating on this edition compared to the earlier one. Highly recommended as a reliable, detailed, fully up to date and useable map of Madeira.

I have visited Istanbul around nine times and Izmir about seven. This guide will really take you to the wrong hotels and restaurants. The cultural guide is ok despite a rather boring layout, esp. maps. But the restaurant suggestions are disasterous: where do you find Istanbul's best gourmet, Corne d'Or, or the intellectual bastion Yakup 2, or the best chicken and mezes in Istanbul (Hanedan), or the nostalgic charm of Istanbul's 1930's belle epoque (Rejans)? Instead mediocre places are recommended which will give the dogmatic reader a mediocre holiday. Also, Lonely Planet does not mention the new hotel in Izmir (Crowne Plaza Izmir) which receives raving critics. Does it not know of it yet? And no mention of restaurants like Bonjour, British Grill & Pub, ... Read More:

I've always queried the concept of the Rough Guide series of books. I know there was the TV show in the 80's I think it was, where people like Magenta de Vine pretended to be down with the kids and talk about Eastern Europe on a shoestring budget, all the while looking like her Gucci slacks had never seen a hostel let alone be strewn across its floor. My question about the books was then, should I draw any link between the two brand names spanning different media?

It sort of appears that I should, because the Rough Guide isn't, as one inference might suggest, a loose approximation of information, or an author's best guess at something (i.e. Cornwall is roughly west of London and quite nice). Funny as that might be, it night not ship in significant quantity. ... Read More:

A fabulous LP guide to a fabulous country. Thorough, accurate and honest reviews of everything and anything. AND, unlike other lonely planets, there is a wicked sense of humour and healthy cynicism. These guys dont take themselves too seriously!! Highly recommended.

This is such a cute little book! the recipes aren't really hi-tec or anything but it tells you how to build a fire and gives you checklists for equipment and stuff, which is good if you've never been camping before. and it's got lots of yum stuff i never would have thought of, like cooking roast chicken or this omlette with strawberries in. Theer are other harder recipes, but I preferd the easy, messy stuff which involves stuffing things on sticks! And barbecue stuff is well-covered too. The pictures look good but not fake, and the words are quite quirky and funny, made me laugh anyway, which i wasn't expecting. glad i bought it... might spur me on to cook a bit more outdoors instead of heading to the pub...

Found this Lake District Guide brilliant and was just what we were looking for. It is compact but packed full of up to date information that was essential to our holiday. The maps are very useful and has a good selection of places to eat and drink in all the areas around the Lake District. Would have been lost without it! Definately recommended!
