I've always had a great love of our fantastic British Coastline. It has always been my ambition to carry out the complete tour. Perhaps one day I will achieve the ambition! For the meantime I will have to make do with the books and the DVD's! I notice that the first book "coast" received some criticism by the reviewers here on Amazon so I was keen to check out if the 'grumbles' applied to the 2nd volume "The Journey Continues". As far as I'm concerned I have no complaints at all...this is a wonderful book. It contains 16 area tours in all starting from the south coast working in a clockwise fashion from Dover ending up and finishing in London. The Channel Islands, Ireland, Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland are included. There is a gazetter organised ... Read More:

This edition printed July 2008 is lacking in so many respects that I was left very frustrated. For example departure tax in Syria by land border is SYR£500 and by air SYR£1500, not the stated SYR£200 in the book. A lot of the maps were inaccurate. Adding 20% to most prices not the usual 10% seemed to be the order of the day. This guide seems too concerned in plugging 'the authors choice' (any kick backs involved...?) or showing pictures of people that could be 'nearly like us' with a personal profile and other nonsense. Having bought and used LP books for over 10 years, this is a poor effort and hugely dissapointing. It lacks the impartiality of other guides and the editorial stance seems to have shifted considerably since the BBC Worldwide buy out (no ... Read More:

I've just spent three months travelling round Sri Lanka with both the Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet guide. I have to say, that the Rough Guide proved, on almost all counts, to be the much better option.
Obviously neither guide is perfect - the Rough Guide is excellent on the South coast, but not so good when you travel further north, and both guides fail to give much useful information (or the correct information!) about how to travel around by public bus. However, the Lonely Planet guide is pretty inaccurate throughout. Many of the maps are wrong, for instance, and it fails to actually give a balanced view of whether place is worth visiting. Even if some people might consider the Rough Guide to be too negative, I found that it was quite fair ... Read More:

Maybe this is not for the very serious walker, but for those of us not up to the longer walks, this provides a very good resource in terms of variety and coverage and the fact it caters for shorter walks. It would not be possible to provide the required level of detail for all 1001 walks in one book, so I think a local map would always be advisable. We are pleased with it.

This book is truly great. The information on inter-country travelling is superb - not given in as much detail in any other book I've found. There are so many maps that have been kept despite the serious editing that has made the book so relatively small. Accommodation descriptions and prices always accurate, and so good on local transport. A great book for the budget traveller!
