Has a comprehensive bibliography for future research, and two sets of indicies so can be used as a text book. However you can also read it as a story book. I was surprised just how fascinating the history and development of the concepts behind each of the words described turned out to be.

Although this book is marketed as a Business book, it has a much wider appeal. It offers some very interesting glimpses into how Richard Branson runs his companies, as well as some of the global issues that he believes in.
During the course of the book, he outlines how he first started in business, and how he grew Virgin Records from very little. He also gives insights into the mobile phone business, his airlines, and even space travel. It's interesting to discover that Richard does not view `Virgin' as one large company, but rather as a brand.. each section runs as a separate business, with it's own team. As with Tessa Kiros' previous books, this one is absolutely gorgeous. Gold-edged pages and many, many shots of Venice and its people, especially around Carnival time make it a delight to leaf through.
So far, so good, and if you know someone who loves Venice or has had a special time there, this would be a good gift. But I doubt how much actual cooking I'll be doing from this book...octopus, anchovies, special Italian sausage and prosecco feature highly on the ingredients list, none of which I find particularly appealing or easy to lay my hands on. It's certainly not the family-friendly fare of Falling Cloudberries or Apples for Jam. Nice to read but I think I'll stick to her earlier works for cooking. >>More Details |

This fascinating book, thick with historical data and insights, makes a riveting read. Whilst having no wish to quarrel with previous reviewers, for this reviewer, the book's strength is to be found within the all too rare combination of the elucidation of pertinent details and the subsequent compilation and marshaling of this data in order to reach coherent conclusions. The hi-lighting of detailed minutiae is only of secondary value, it would appear, if any historical advances are unable to be procured from it. Fortunately, this fastidiously researched volume abounds in both.

With a cut-off date of mid-September, the 2009 edition (which is really September 2007 to September 2008) misses the financial market collapse and the election of Barack Obama, for which we will have to wait for the 2010 edition.
Nevertheless, as in previous years the 2009 edition is well worth having for its entertaining mix of current events and trivia. Detail on the growth of fuel poverty and death tolls in Iraq are balanced with reminders of soap-star gossip and lists of useless statistics. Apparently, 45% of eleven year olds say they would rather read a book than watch tv, up from 38% on 2004 - good news for Amazon! There is something here for everyone >>More Details |

Like so many people in the country I was blown away by the success of the recent Olympics in Beijing, but especially by the amazing performances of the GB cycling team. So when i noticed "Heroes, Villains & Velodromes" on the shelf of my local book shop I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't sure what to expect really but what i got was a lively, entertaining and extremely well written read about the revolution in british cycling and Hoy's part in it over the last ten years. As Moore says in his comments it's not nessecarily a story just about Chris Hoy but he is the principal character and 'star of the show'

This is a beautiful collection of love poems from Beethoven to Napoleon to name but a few. I saw this featured in Sex and the City and had to read it! I then found out it had been created following the demand after the movie and thankfully it was!
Made me laugh when one 'Great Man' wrote love letters to multiple women but I guess the heart can love more than once! Get it for a loved one of yourself, truly heartwarming. >>More Details |

I've been wanting to make preserves for years, but I've only just started to do it. Loving the whole River Cottage ethos, I was naturally interested in this book. I read some great reviews and so I bought it, and IMO it's just as wonderful as others said it was.
There's a wealth of inspiring recipes, many of which come with suggestions for modifications which can be made by those who have different ingredients/would like to use something slightly different. Everything is clearly explained, and the photographs just make me want to go down to the kitchen and eat up every last preserve in the fridge! This book is an absolute inspiration. Another wonderfully mouth watering book by Rosemary. I only received my copy of her new book today and am heading out to buy some salmon to make the Conft of Salmon with Courgette Spaghetti and my next venture will be the Roast Duck Breasts with Onion Tart and Butternut Squash Gratin.
All the recipes look absolutely scrumptious and I have found those that I have done out of her first book to be fool proof and Rosemary's instructions are easy to follow. I do not normally bother to read Introductions to books, but this one is enchanting, like reading a mini novel and her notes in between each section are so readable and informative.
