This is the second part of Sir Bobby Charlton's fascinating autobiography. In the first, "My Manchester United Years", he provided a lot of moving personal insight into, for example, his trauma post-Munich air disaster, how the club dealt with the other surviving players and their families, and his, at times, difficult relationship with his mother and brother. In other words it was a personally revealing book. This second part, by comparison, is in many ways more typical of a footballer's autobiography, focusing on match details and brief, albeit personal, pen pictures of the characters involved. For regular consumers of books covering this era of football there is little new or surprising here.

In this ninth outing for the teenage love disaster that is Georgia Nicolson we find not much new going on. Having said that, the writing is still sharp and funny and Rennison tries to inject some seriousness into this volume with tragedy befalling Angus and problems between Georgia's parents. She never lets it veer too much from the tried and tested formula however with Georgia currently on the bison horns of love between Masimo the Italian Luurve God and Dave the Laugh.
I do find these books both funny and entertaining, but am now beginning to hope that Rennison moves things on a little in the next volume. >>More Details |

I just finished reading the Temporal Void last night, and I would implore anyone who has a mind for imaginative sprawling space operas to buy this book. It is a wonderful addition to Hamilton's established Commonwealth series, beginning chronologically with Pandoras Star and Judas Unchained (known collectively as the Commonwealth saga), and the Void trilogy, of which the Temporal Void is number 2.
The plot picks up directly after the end of Dreaming Void, with Justine escaping Centurion Station, immediately after the Void encroachment is triggered by the Second Dreamer's rejection of the Void entity known as a Skylord. Because this book is a bit on the large side and has some fantastic photos it seems to double as a coffee table book and an instruction manual . Its an excellent book and Alan Titchmarsh is at his best here .
The first sixty or so pages is concerned with what Alan calls the ground rules and you get advice on everything from planning and design to feeding and composting . The rest of the book contains the directory where you get a run down on all the common fruit veg and herbs found in most gardens . Now this is pretty comprehensive so expect a little information overload . But personally I think its great to have all this info under the one cover . I loved Zoe Heller's last books but this one is packed with the most unsympathetic bunch of characters I've ever come across in one book. I didn't care about any of them, and the matriarch who dominates the book is so relentlessly unpleasant that I was absolutely indifferent to her fate. Her appalling selfish cruelty towards all her children was implausible and unquestioned by any of her family or friends. Her children were all equally unattractive and, despite their grim family background, I felt no sympathy for their fates.
None of them seemed to learn anything about themselves and none of them seemed truly affected by the death of their father. There were no moving or telling encounters between mother and children, just a lot of vicious unprovoked ranting. Read More: >>More Details |

Well this one won't keep you awake at night. As a modest runner myself I found much of this book tedious, samey and uninspiring. A book like this is crying out for some dazzling insight into the process, the feeling, the elation of running but instead the reader just gets a not very interesting insight into the writer himself. I can't help but think that Murakami is just doing a walk-through here, scraping the barrel for a few old diary entries at the behest of his publisher. One run merges into another with only the degree of self-indulgence being the main distinguishing feature of each. More than anything I was surprised by the author's afterword in which he claimed to have honed and polished his work ad infinitum before finally releasing it. It doesn't show.
