As a life long Londoner and a person well read in history this book was just up my street.

It was a well written book packed with all sorts of fascinating details. For the most part I enjoyed reading it although it could occasionally be long winded and tedious.

I bought this book to fill gaps in my historical knowledge and the introduction mentions that the contents are for everyone who is interested in history but frightened of the fog! It lifts the fog completely, is beautifully written, concise and easy to follow putting history in a chronological perspective.
I am still enjoying dipping in and out of its excellent selection of events and thoroughly recommend it.

Alison Weir has really made history come to life in this fantastic book. The opulent and at times barbaric Tudor age comes vividly to life with the telling of each of Henry VIII's wives' stories. It is all told very movingly and you really feel that you know these women and Henry VIII himself.
If only history were taught like this in schools - I for one would have got a lot more out of it. Highly recommended.

In Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, Maryanne Wolf, an expert on the reading brain, describes how our brains manage to read. Reading is not an innate activity, but it is an invention, and only a few thousand years old at that. It does not come naturally to humans in the way that walking or eating does and on the first page of this book, we learn that it is only because of the remarkable "plasticity" of our brains that we are able to achieve an understanding of the written word.

The book is divided into three parts. Firstly the history of how humans learned to read, secondly how reading is learned and how it develops, and thirdly what happens when in cases like dyslexia, something goes wrong in the "learning ... Read More:

This is a fascinating book for anyone who loves London, and an eye-opener if you have ever wondered whether cities have any folklore apart from ghost stories. Steve Roud divides London into seven regions, and finds an amazing variety of tales and customs (past and present) to discuss in each one, and links them to the buildings and streets. In the section on the City of Westminster, for instance, you get gruesome tales of hangings at Tyburn, conspiracy theories surrounding the fate of Cromwell's corpse, the custom of wife-selling, May Day celebrations by chimney sweeps, plague pits, the fair at Mayfair, gypsy fortune tellers, a school Pancake Day custom, the famous ghosts of 50 Berkeley Square and Newgate Gaol, and much more.

Roud doesn't just tell the story ... Read More:

I was given this book and found it very frustrating and massively disappointing. It is basically a compendium of quotes from the IWM Sound Archive. Those in the know will be aware that the IWM Oral Historian is Peter Hart, author of a superb book on the Somme. Please buy his book or any of Martin Middlebrook, Lyn Macdonald etc. rather than this shoddy example of poor research and lazy publishing. Quite why Levine has felt the need to use the same sources as other Somme books (e.g. Hart) but lacking any of the strategic or tactical understanding is beyond me. The book is a sad example of what publishers will do for a quick buck. I mean no disrespect to the men whose quotes are used. The material is interesting but much of it has been used before and it is hardly `Forgotten'. ... Read More:

This book is indeed fantastic to read, it is well researched and gives a slightly more wholesome view of what our boys are up against. My only criticism, not meaning to take anything away from the author, is that the book is not written as if a soldier is talking, but rather from a third person perspective, which is good but not my personal choice (after reading sniper one). This by no means takes away from the value of the book and its a very good read, for anyone who wants a bit of a clue as to what's really going on in afghanistan.

Millenium: The End of the World and the Forging of Christendom by Tom Holland is a very good book dealing with the turbulent years around the turn of the first millenium. At the start of this period western European Christianity seemed to be under threat from all sides and obsessed with the end of the world. However, as time progressed Catholicism and the states of Europe gained confidence and took the offensive against its opponents. This book shows how this happened but also provides interesting pieces of information about how the nation states of Europe such as Germany, France and Germany evolved and came to be different for example how France became a deeply divided country with a weak central government while England became heavily centralised. It is an immensely readable book ... Read More:
