Not a great work of literature - rather an enjoyable romp through the life and times of a bunch of colourful old drunken soho queers. I enjoyed it immensely. All the references to Wheeler's oyster bar, the various Soho pubs. If you grew up through the sixties and lived in London and are a bit arty it's real history close to home - history that means something to people. It reminded me of the times I spent wandering around Soho years ago, when it was just a dowdy uninspiring bit of london where you could still park outside the pub withot getting a parking ticket or wander about without getting accosted every five minutes by somebody wanting to sell you some drug. That romantic vision of bohemian life though with guys in black polo necks discussing ... Read More:

Arranged chronologically the book is divided into six chapters; chapter one covers the first twenty five years of Turner's life with the other five chapters covering ten years each. Well written and very readable the text provides an insight into Turner the man and Turner the artist, and includes numerous quotations from Turner and his contemporaries; it succeeds among other things in bringing alive the artist as a person.

Concluding the book is an extensive Chronology; Inventory of the Late Residence of J.M.W. Turner; Turner's Library; Bibliography; a detailed List of Illustrations and an Index.

The book is fully illustrated throughout, with the images usually on or close to the page on which they are discussed. In total there ... Read More:

Very often I have come to use this book and not been able to find what I need, probably best for reasearching more traditional artists etc, but can be very useful to have at hand. Also this, the 7th edition, whs first published in 1997 and I don't think it has been updated since which is probably necessary.

Having read several authorities on Michaelangelo I found this book very disappointing. There are several criticisms I could make, but above all I think that Graham-Dixon too often allows his particular prejudices to get in the way of the facts. An example is his brief discussion of Micahelangelo's sexuality. All serious modern scholars (from Lord Clark onwards) are agreed that Michaelangelo was almost certainly homosexual in inclination: though whether he remained other than celibate we will probably never know. Graham-Dixon's suggestion that there is no evidence one way or the other and that he was probably non-sexual is lazy and not convincing. There is quite a lot of evidence pointing the other way. No mention is made, for example, of Micahelangelo's ... Read More:

Anne Sudworth is such a talented artist. Her use of contrast between darkness and light brings such life to her paintings. This book is a remarkable collection of some of her best, elegantly presented and aptly titled "Gothic Fantasies". Truly inspiring, the works always spark my imagination, causing the unseen to become seen (or is it just me?). Hauntingly beautiful, the images are one moment dark and brooding, the next airy and ethereal. But they are always magical.

I've allways been a big fan of Iain McCaig and I was pretty happy to know I could have an artbook of his amazing talent. When I was told about the book I was quick to order it hoping I would get a good artbook filled with gorgeous images. I got that, but I also got much more. The author goes into the effort of creating and engaging story around the book and his work, placing the reader in the position of someone that is experiencing art and it's development process
. Its a great book, filled with amazing images and a great story. It even comes with little tutorial booklets inside. Worth every penny and a must for any aspiring artist.

This is a long, long book with a great deal of information. Clocking in at over five hundred pages and covering about thirty artists of the Italian Renaissance, it is fairly comprehensive and detailed.

Some of Vasari's 'facts' have been discredited over the years and so the reader should not take everything here as gospel and indeed should be using this as a supplementary text with other material to get the best use out of it. Nevertheless it remains an important contemporary text and one of the first books on 'art history' ever produced.

I have to admit that I found it extremely hard going. There are great long lists of works and their subjects and the patrons of artists which it is easy to get bored or confused by but there are some interesting ... Read More:

If you like Art Deco, and detailed explorations with excellent photography then this publication is for you. The photography by Paul Riddle reveals the essence of this important movement in recent architecture. Many of the buildings listed, are not commonly known or accessible to the general public, so enjoy an exploration that can be done at home!

This book is excellent for anyone interested, and is suitable for students of art, design, fashion and architecture... A must
