My copy of The Woman's Book was published in 1911 and weighs nearly 3lb - this represents a serious number of things to know about. There are chapters on kitchen work, servants, cookery, table appointments, the linen cupboard (including price lists), dress (including trousseau and spending an allowance wisely), etiquette, millinery, holidays, pets, children, laundry, and housework. The outstanding part, in my opinion, is the 10 chapters devoted to careers for women: everything from the civil service to arts and crafts via social work and teaching in the Colonies (with advice on a suitable wardrobe). There is also a section on the women's suffrage movement, and a list of women's clubs in London. Lots of small black and white illustrations dotted ... Read More:

This is an excellent book with some unique ideas. The sections on how to zone open plan living spaces and clever ideas to locate storage are useful to everyone, no matter the size of your home. Some of the ideas, especially in the kitchen section, are now making there way in to mainstream kitchen design so are not as revolutionary as they would have been when the book was written.
My main criticism of the book, and the reason it gets four starts, is it desperately needs updating. Although the ideas are just as relevant today the photographs of dingy 80's interiors and references to storing 'walkmans' and 'cassette tapes' make the book feel dated.
Azby's other book 'The very small home' looks at interiors more than actual ... Read More:

This book is beautiful. I have given it three stars (and considered 4) just for the joy of flicking through it. However, unfortunately there are not many actual real solutions on offer.

This book is terrific. I initially thought this book contained quite a bit of padding, but I decided to cut straight to the chase and so used its ideas to organise my desk area. Now I wish I'd had it years ago. Before buying this book my wife and I were thinking of having our loft or garage converted into living space as we had run out of room in our home. This book has convinced us that we don't need to, saving thousnads and thousands of pounds for us. If this sounds too good to be true, read some of the other reviews.

Unless your house has piles of clutter in every room don't bother with this book. Because that's about all she tells you, over and over in almost every chapter is how to sort and dispose of clutter. I really didn't find it to be of much use at all in terms of the best ways to actually go about cleaning your house. And her ideas about shopping lists are really strange. She says that keeping a shopping list doesn't work because teenagers won't write things down when they use them up. Instead you are supposed to make lists of every grocery item you ever buy and then photocopy them. Then people are supposed to go through the printed lists and circle what they have used up. Exactly why a teenager will do this if they won't just write something on a list ... Read More:

I read this book when I was swamped by possessions. I felt overwhelmed and miserable. This book is THE bible for clutter clearing. Where do I start on my clutter? How do I get rid of it? What do I do with it all? Written in a serious, yet humorous, style with loads of practical advice on identifying and eliminating clutter, the message of this book is that clutter is actually harmful and you CAN do something about it. Simple guidelines make it really easy to get rid of the junk that is driving you crazy.
After years of struggling in self-inflicted chaos, this book provided the impetus and instructions for me to get my act together. With my own success under my belt, I am now in demand teaching others how to do it!
