I have found this book to be very inspiring. It is also very hearwarming. It takes you through the diary of a family trying to be self sufficient and live sustainably. Well worth the read. It was light hearted interspersed with facts, recipes and practical advice. I haven't been able to put it down and it makes you realise what life could be like

This is not a TV family undertaking a lifestyle change for the benefit of the cameras. This is real people, taking positive steps towards a green lifestyle. I loved the series and whilst we cannot all find a property with a waterwheel and spring, we can adpt many of the principles and projects that the Strawbridge family have done.
Everything we do has an impact on the environment and being aware of this, taking time and effort to green up our lifestyle, is a very rewarding experience. As a result of reading this book we have made changes, saved money, saved energy, and eaten some delicious home-grown vegetables. So I feel quite smug and jolly pleased that I bought this book.

I bought this book, as though I have recently moved (and thus disposed of most of my junk) I am a complete hoarder and thought it might help me to keep on top of my new tidy and uncluttered home!
It is true to say that most of the advice is obvious, but of course cluttered homes are not created out of logic, and sometimes the obvious does need to be pointed out.
To my sheer horror, after reading this book I discovered not only had I not really de-junked my life properly when I moved, but also, that only 3 months after moving I am already slipping back into old habits, this book has helped me get back on top of things and gives good advice on how to keep up the good work.

I was very disappointed with this book! I have only given it 1 star because I had to for reviewing purposes otherwise I wouldn't have given it any.
If you are looking for an insightful book full of brilliant survival tips which enables you to plan for and survive disasters from earthquakes to floods and other emergency situations I would certainly not recommend this one. The advice given is very basic, often totally obvious to anyone except the most complete idiot, and appears to be backed up by a minimum of research or practical experience. The whole thing has the ring of an author who writes by formula looking for something to write about and simply jumping on the global warming bandwagon in order to make a few bucks.

Lady Victoria Leatham sums it up well in the magazine: 'The joy about this sensible and well-researched book is that it saves hours trawling through peripheral subjects on Google when trying to find a solution to a domestic crisis. Mrs Danvers has done it all for you.'
