I've bought a few books and watched a couple of DVDs on how to get organised and sort out my home. We didn't really live in a pigpen but the place seemed to be in constant need of a tidy up. There was a need for oxygen masks everytime someone said they were popping by.
I never thought one book can have such an influence on the way we walk around the house. Like Pam and Peggy say: "Don't pass it up. Pick it up and put it away". Such a simple instruction with amazing results. Highly recommended!!

One of the previous reviewers thought it should have been broken up into several smaller books, I could not disagree more. True, this is a large book, but it's well set out, clearly written and is a font of good old fashioned advice.
My copy always sits on a shelf in my living room, and is my first port of call for a simple answer to most household queries. When I moved to America, it was one of the first things I packed.
I suppose that some of the information I may never actually use, but like the television series this book came from, it is all fascinating stuff.

This is a great book on decorating in country style, and out of those few I have, its my absolute favorite. Its not a book that has any craft projects or recipes for anything, just description of the country style, trends and looks, and of course tons of beautiful pictures. It has various chapters corresponding to each room in the home, and one for outdoors. So if you, like me, just want to read about the country style, look at the inspirational pictures and then figure the rest out for yourself, then buy this book. Decorating books with craft projects don't appeal to me. One will just end up having the same items as the other readers, and that's not "country" in my eyes. Since it is the small things that make up this style of decorating, ... Read More:

I have checked this book out numerous times from the local library and just had to have a personal copy. It is one of the best books in the field of "simpler living" I have ever read. For those fearing the worst of the "Y2K" or even for those who just enjoy living "off the land" or getting "back to simpler things of life" I highly recommend this book.

It's the kind of book you give to someone launching themselves on domesticity for the first time, much of it is quite honestly pretty obvious but as the author says on page 8, in the introduction:
"Housekeeping manuals, as a genre, are often accused of belonging to the School of what Basil Fawlty called "the Bleeding Obvious", patronizing readers with information that is basic common sense. Well, common sense is not as common as is commonly supposed. If flossing your teeth is common sense, why do dentists report soaring levels of gum disease [...] This guide makes no apologies for taking you back to basics, showing you how to wash your hair, how to wash your hands and even how to wipe your bottom - surely the reductio ad absurdum of all instructional ... No pretty photos and no silly language. Just reliable recipes that i still use, and enjoyable notes about impractical stuff like hiring and firing a kitchen maid. Love it.
