I am currently learning French and German having mastered Spanish.
While Dorothy Richmond's Spanish Vocabulary is a veritable 400 word bonanza of words and helpful exercises, this one is a decided disappointment. The Spanish one is twice it's size and is excellent value with plenty of thorough exercises to consolidate the lists of new words. This French Vocabulary has lots of word lists but only four-five exercises per unit. The exercises themselves are not particularly thorough, requiring only true/false answers and very often requiring words that are not listed at all in the previous wordlist. This work largely reverses understanding from a position that sees "learning difficulties" to one that addresses "teaching difficulties". Every professional reading this book will be challenged to examine whether their practice makes people handicapped. Handicap is what we do to people, not something that is inherently part of the person and it is unfortunate that the word has slipped from our politically correct language. Olga Bogdashina presents a very demanding argument for more responsible behaviour on the part of carers.
By the way, never mind Autism and Asperger Syndrome, this work teaches something about communication that would be of benefit in any relationship. >>More Details |

This is an excellent book, covering all the key areas of medicine, surgery, o+g, paeds and psych examined in finals. The book gives invaluable information and advice for passing the clinical exams, focussing on both short and long cases. Each chapter starts with a bit of a pep-talk about how to approach the exam and how to communicate well with examiners, then goes through lots of cases within that specialty. Cases are given a star-rating depending on how common they are in exams, another useful feature.
Relatively cheap and definitely worth the cash in the run up to exams, I also liked using it on clinical attachments. A must for all medical students! >>More Details |

I acquired this book while writing my thesis on School Refusal, and feel that the title would benefit from a subheading to the effect of "A practical guide for parents". The informal tone and lack of academic references (notable exception being the section on bullying) result in a paucity of information that can be applied effectively to academic writing, etc. That said, for parents dealing with this serious problem, I am sure it would be extremely useful. I think students would be better off with something like "Understanding School Refusal" by Thambirajah et al., which is also published by Jessica Kingsley.
