Yet again another attempt of a painfully poor, talentless Z list celebrity to cash in. Rather than create sympathy, it made me loathe this imbecile even more.

This book was first published in 1992, but don't let that put you off - the topics are more relevant today than ever before, particularly given the way we appear to be sliding head-first into another age of unreason. One example would be the chapter on stereotypes: very appropriate in this post 9/11 world, showing the development of prejudice towards out-groups and detailing 9 reasons why they occur (and shouldn't). If only people would read this instead of the latest anti-minority rant in their daily newspaper, we'd have a far more enlightened and tolerant public.
There are stacks of case studies in the book - well over a hundred, described in great detail (sometimes so much detail that you need to re-read the rules of the experiment ... Read More:

A very disappointing dull story and ruined a great idea. I read very widely and enjoy a lot of fiction and was really looking forward to reading this book after learning about the story from the film being made over Christmas of this book.
It was just so dull, I read past the first 100 pages hoping something was going to happen but beyond the same thing happening over and over it seemed; (the main characters escaping from the villain's village and then either being recaptured or returning to escape all over again.)
In the end I couldnt finish it and donated it to my school library as some people obviously have liked this book and perhaps a younger audience would get more from it. However I resent the two days I "lost" trying ... Read More:

Today one might think that war which is seemingly overshadowed by other wars in the public consciousness would provide an obscure yet perfect setting for a great novel. Not so here and far from perfect. This could have been any war anywhere, virtually. I learned little in this cobbled together book which has been assembled with little craft or skill. There is page after page of Eastendersish style prose, poorly described yet shocking events and even cheaper unnecessary little sex scenes.

This book is wonderful, imaginative, easy to read and understand. I also found it entertaining, for a 'non cook' that is praise indeed! Although I am no great cook, I do keep chickens for eggs, the wife wont let me eat them, (yet!)I do grow lots of stuff, and much of this is credited to the Author. A man who cherishes his food and where it comes from, and how. This book comes close to being my Bible

I am totally satisfied with this excellent little guide.
It describes and illustrates most of the survival techniques, methods and tools, I have seen on Ray Mears and other similar TV programmes. I am particuarly pleased with the sections on fire making, knots, knife and axe sharpening.
Comprising 384 pages, it contains a large number of informative black and white diagrams, includes several pages with colour illustations and can still fit comfortably into a breast pocket.
If you want a comprehensive, take anywhere, survival guide, dont hesitate - buy this.
UNBELIEVABLE.....
I have just finished this book in one sitting, and what can i say but wow. An unbelievable end to what has been a brilliant trilogy.
This book see's the six friends try and end the unspeakable evil that attacks the town every seven years. The book focus's on the relationship between Gage and Cybil, two people who like to be on their own, and i found it fasinating to watch the realationship progress. The evil that attacks the group intensifies as it gets nearer to the 7th of july and the the three men and women once again must face their fears to overcome it. They also have some very tough decisions to make and Ms roberts puts you right in the middle of it all. You care for these people and throughout the book you have your fingers, toes and anything ... This book makes fascinating reading and is written in a humorous and easy-to-read style. My only complaint is that the author tends to skip over the scientific discoveries of the 18th and 19th centuries rather quickly and then spends most of his time on the 20th century and mainly American contributions to science. But, after all, Mr. Bryson is typically American and tends to follow National Geographic style in this. Still, it is well worth reading even several times and is very thought provoking. Thank you, Mr. Bryson, for explaining it all so neatly.

I got the impression that Peston was urged to put out a book quickly, so he used a lot of his old archive material (Green, M and S etc). But it's worth it as there are some good chapters on hedge funds, and a reminder that our banks were actually borrowing to buy all that toxic waste, which somehow drove home the stupidity of it all.
Not as good as his scoops!
