This book provides an overview of the story of the Bible, not the text itself, but how it was written, how the canon was selected and how it has been interpreted and used over the centuries. Spanning the millennia from the writing to the present, it gives a view of the place of the Bible in the world that is often missing when reading about a particular book or thene of the Scriptures.
Author Karen Armstrong introduces, or reminds, the reader, about the sources of the Old and New Testament, the multiple authors of Isaiah and the way the Bible shaped the Jewish self-image. As it progresses, she cites comments by many writers, Christian and Jewish, including Sts. Augustine and Jerome, Martin Luther and many others.
Will you ever travel on the underground again without constantly looking over your shoulder? Not after reading this! Lots and lots of well written stories about ghosts and unexplained happenings in the London Underground. Atmospheric and well detailed, this is the perfect reading material for curling up on cold winter nights in front of the fire. Would make a good Christmas gift for the discerning ghost story fan. I have read numerous books about haunted sites, and this one certainly does not disappoint. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed reading McGrath's book because it is an almost surgically precise critique of the main thrusts in Dawkins' "God Delusion". It is short and easy to read but perhaps a bit pricey for what is an extended essay. Although I found Dawkins' book stimulating, I found this book useful to restoring a sense of balance in the arguments. McGrath concedes that Dawkins makes some valid points (e.g. on violence in the name of religions) but is equally robust (though less aggressive) about making his case.

This book is filled with contradictions and false assumptions. The patronizing, didactic tone is at first irritating but soon becomes boring.
If you need something to help you sleep at night, this book may be what you're looking for. If you want to learn about Buddhism, look elsewhere.

Here, Harris responds to the thousands of mostly indignant letters he got for writing "The End of Faith". We might assume he is attacking a stereotype of Christianity, as a fanatically intolerant relic of the Dark Ages. But it seems these Christian letter writers really did convince him, quoting chapter and verse, that their religion stands for bigotry.
To me, Harris's letter sounds roughly like an argument between two Americans, one a critical thinker, and the other some kind of super-patriot who actually insists that everything said or done in American history has been God's will, because America is God's country. That would roughly compare to claims of inerrancy for the Bible's vast record of ancient Middle Eastern civilizations.
The story that Esther and Jerry Hicks have to tell is truly a remarkable one. Jerry was always interested in spirituality and all that was out there. But his wife wanted absolutely nothing to do with his explorations into the non-physical. Oh, how all of that was to change.
Without revealing too much of their journey, suffice it to say that she changed her tune - and by quite a bit. You see, Esther has become a channel for a disincarnate being called Abraham. His teachings, through her, have become the basis for a series of books by the Hickses.
In The Law of Attraction, Abraham explains this simple but profound universal principle. With its practical and deliberate application, we can learn to bring into our lives what we want and release that ... Read More:

I have quite a few translations but this is by far the best, its so simple to read and understand. Commentary is short and the flow is good. Simple summary at the beginning is really good. Would recommend this to anyone and everyone as the 1st translation that should be read.

I found O'Connor & Lages's style to be useful and straightforward, with a continuous emphasis on practice. Very helpful for someone familiar with NLP and keen to use it in coaching. Regular reminders to avoid psychoanalysing clients and just helping them get on with their agenda proved very useful to me. Very useful book.
